I've been in such an economic slump that I've had to drop out of the only game I was in, which was the Warhammer Fantasy game I was in with my friends in the K.C. area.
Unfortunately if I want to find a game in Lawrence, it seems either I have to have one of the locals in our extended group (who incidentally I don't really get along with outside of games) as my GM, or I have to put together a game to run myself.
I don't get the same creative outlet when I run that I do when I play, and in fact I tend to stress myself out when I'm running a game, so I tend to avoid it whenever possible.
So what does that leave me? PbP? I've been thinking about trying one of these out for size, I worry about time committment, as I don't want to hold up the game if I'm not on every day.
Hopefully the financial tides will turn and I'll be able to rejoin my homies soon.
If little things like "money" and "time" are enough to keep you from gaming, I don't know if you're cut out for this hobby... :p
Seriously, though, give PbP a whirl. I had a game that lasted over a year. Didn't get past the second level of my dungeon, but hey, it was still fun.
Yeah, I hear you. I haven't bought a game product since before my marriage ended. Other than a dragon magazine or two. Usually I only buy when I'm getting into a new game. What edition is D&D on now, anyways? ;)
I'm keeping my eyes open for a PBP that looks intriguing, so maybe that'll help.
i tried running a PBP game once (billy might remember that). i discovered that i had no idea what i was doing, and it didn't last very long. ;)
Is it an issue of not being able to afford the gas to go to people's house, or to keep up with the gaming materials?
If it's a travel issue then a play by email game might work for your group, if everyone is willing to do it. A guy in our gaming group is in (I think) 2 PBEM games and it seems to run pretty smoothly, and faster than the PbPs I've seen.
I have a 3.5 players handbook and that's it besides misc pdfs i have gotten for free. Where exactly is the cost that's killing you?
With gas, toll and food costs, I usually have to come up with an extra $15 to $20 just to go game. And on some weeks, I'm so broke I need to use the gas I have just to commute back and forth to work, so I can't justify using it to go and game and then not having enough to get to work later in the week.
I don't think many people in my group have time to do a PBeM, so it'd probably have to be with another group, but maybe I'll test the waters.

I actually do live in a small city, but many of my gaming group are now living in Kansas City(which is East of town), and since I work in Topeka (the other direction) the commute to game can be painful. :)

Talk to the other people from your town in my Sunday game. They would probably be willing to let you carpool with them for free.

When I moved a little over a year ago, I got over an hour away from my group. While we still get together once a month or every other month to play a game, it's more often than not just a boardgame than an RPG campaign. I could find a group where I live, but my schedule is pretty erratic with travel and long hours, that it would still be extremely rough to make a game with any regularity. Until something changes, I'll have to get my gaming fix through video games. :(
