This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I also told you this thread wasn't about what you think it is.

Ugh, I know! So, the secret to really good collard greens is actually chicken stock and bacon. If someone tells you to cook them with water and/or salted pork(aka disappointing garbage bacon wannabe meat), that's grounds right there to disown them. I know you're more used to being on the other side of that kind of interaction, but I'm sure you'll figure it out. Then salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. Personally, I use red pepper flakes for a bit of a kick, but you could probably used sliced jalapeno or those tianjin(Chinese chili) peppers if you prefer them, assuming you want the kick(you do, obviously, because why wouldn't you?).

If they still turn out bad, you're just a bad cook and should probably stick to something easier. After all, "Friendship is . . ." well, okay, probably not in the cards for you. But you seem okay with that, so get your pony on!

Good thing I'm psychic, or we'd still be guessing what you meant! You're welcome.

I used to like D&D when it was still D&D and not completely hijacked by companies, experts, & pundits alike that preferred to dictate to me why their revisionism was so much better than what I was playing before. I don't know, but my old books still read and play fine.

I like Traveller, I guess ...
Too bad most 'fans/players' of the game are so busy laughing at "Muh character died in CharGen" ... (REALLY? like THAT's not worn out ...)
and re-humanizing the aliens (What would a Vargr know about a milkbone anyways ...?)
rather than actually playing the game. Mongoose rulez, I suppose ...

This thread is really more of an observation than whatever you assume it is.

I totally get where you are coming from.

I agree. I've looked at several OSR games and there are a few that actually do new things. But then its not an "osr" game anymore is it?

I despise the term because there was never anything to "revive" or "renaissance". And "old school" is still fucking derogatory so fuck off and die everyone using it to knock down some game.

But my early experiences with OSR and later experiences with how it was being abused really turned me off it. Its just an excuse to steal other peoples games with an utterly fake excuse to thoroughly abuse the 3e SRD/OGL. And then try to claim that allows theft of games totally not D&D.

Then theres the elitists and fanatics in the OSR that make it all the worse.

Then there's the part where it's built around worshipping old D&D, which was garbage. 3e and 5e is where it's at. And 2e was the greatest era setting-wise, and in terms of class bloat (which was nonexistent). Kits where also a better concept than having five hundred and fifty thousand distinct classes to cover every possible variation of what's essentially a fighter or a mage. 2e, 3e and 5e need to get together in a room and figure out how to make the greatest edition of D&D possible (which it certainly wasn't Basic).

Everything before that was shit, I tell you! SHIT! :p

Thank you for deciphering the purpose of this thread! I thought it was about discussing optimal dice rolling mechanics. :o

I just killed my 5e game. Last session, I found the rules to be frustrating--particularly with the group I have, so I just dumped it (and them) cold turkey. I too am thinking I might be done with RPGs, at least for a time.

Hard to tell if this is an earnest opener to a dialogue about finding tables for niche interests within the hobby, or just using that as a cloak for the real intent which is to whine about why other people don't like what the OP likes.

If it's the former, I'd say that things are better than they've ever been and are only going to continue to get better, if you're someone like me who is sociable and charismatic in person, and a competent GM and willing to do the legwork to put a group together, I can get a physical game going for any system that I take an interest in at relatively short notice, assuming an absence of global pandemics. If you're waiting for some kind of internet sky mommy to herd shiny new friends into your basement to play with you because you don't like going outside or speaking to people, then you're going to struggle with face to face gaming irrespective of how much or little shared interest is out there.

If it's the latter, cool, nobody cares what you like, and nobody cares that nobody cares. Promote games you like by being someone people want to play with, that's the meta game and in that meta game the OP indicates you're a noob, bitching about balance in a game system you poorly understand.

that is exactly the thing I'm looking into. I have the rules to Danish tarok, and it is very interesting.

I don't know the Danish game. Look up point Tarok if you want a serious game with some tactics. It was the major money game in Vienna before bridge came along. Bridge is a better game but I'm presuming you know what you want. If you want a fast fun game, we used to play Konigsrufen before the other gamers showed up for a session. It's a hoot.

I'm not the guy who started this thread.
I don't hate the OSR. I delight in it.
I have no idea how you associated my blog with this guy.
But I'm not him.
Wanted to clarify that.
I'm currently running an OD&D game.
So... really... not this guy.

I will apologize and retract my comment then. When I looked up the person I had blocked on Facebook my browser pointed to that blog,  even an image search of him linked to that blog. And while your posts looked contrary to the post here, I have known the OP to be contrary at best.

All apologies, not the first time I have been wrong.

It is all good.

I became curious what the connection was and discovered I had linked to a post he had on his blog about a Traveller setting he was creating. (I like promoting non-Third Imperium settings to illustrate how the game was built for you to create your own setting.)

Check out Danish Tarok which actually manages to be very sophisticated without bidding (not sure why, but I kinda like that). It uses the whole French tarot deck. It has survived in Denmark with just a few modifications over centuries, particularly in military circles for some reason.

Speaking of Tales to Astound!, when are you going to get back to writing for it? Yours is easily one of the best around. I can't tell you what a time sink your Traveller series was for me.
The more clichéd my group plays their characters, the better. I don't want Deep Drama™ and Real Acting™ in the precious few hours away from my family and job. I want cheap thrills, constant action, involved-but-not-super-complex plots, and cheesy but lovable characters.

Thank you for being cool about it. Now, looking further I see the connection. If I had a dollar for every time I was wrong and stuck my foot in my mouth I would probably be living in a coastal paradise somewhere and not north Idaho. :p

Well, two things:
1. If I have to choose how to spend my time creating material for my players or writing about games... I'm going to choosing making stuff for my players. So the blog suffers.
2. I am currently turning all the Traveller posts into a book.

It's really quite good. A friend of mine who was obsessed with the Master and Commander books decided to try it, and we got addicted.
