This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I'm not even sure I like RPGs anymore ....

I think I've figured out why you have a hard time finding people that will game with you.

If you run it, you will get players. Not the kind of players you want? Then as GM train them to be the kind of players you want.

If you are looking to game, then games don't happen here in a forum. The discussion of those games happens in a forum. Go to where you can play and create the space you want to play in.

Oh this is going to be fun...

Quote from: JMiskimen;1144746... a bunch of whiny shit ...

1. The OSR is filled with a cadre of enthusiasts who love RPGs of yore and are pumping out tons of content for their fellow hobbyists. Anyone who refers to people making games they love as "thieves and con-artists" is obviously walking around with their pants unzipped and their agenda hanging out. Barn doors are open JM.
2. You are 18 posts in. We have no idea who you are. Our presumptions are better than yours. Until proven otherwise.
3. You can't find people to play games with you because you're an asshole. It's a terrible affliction that usually is accompanied by delusions of grandeur preventing said asshole from recovering. I feel for you JM. You may consider professional help for a fresh perspective.
4. You don't like RPGs that other people like because you're a contrarian asshole. Which is an even worse affliction than the standard asshole illness. This level of infection may require special chemo-therapy.
5. Even though you're a douche canoe  - I still love you. I understand that your attitude is the result of either a) terrible tragedy, b) unfathomable self-loathing, or c) unconscionable abuse. Even though you barreled in here like a drunk Buffalo on roller-skates, you will find us as accepting as we are honest (direct? abrupt?). If you just discard all this pretense of self-importance, I'm sure we could help you find your way. Also, you'll want to turn the asshole down to around 2 or 3. Full 11 hardly works here.

As an example of the camaraderie you may still discover here...

I also do not like D&D or OSR games. I mean, I appreciate them, and I've seen some really awesome designs (Fantastic Heroes & Witchery and ACKS are two of my faves...), but in the end, the D&D thing doesn't jive with me. I may try Pathfinder 2, but that will be more for business related reasons than actual enjoyment of the game. I don't like 5e at all, although I was enamored in the beginning, it fell flat for me pretty quick.

Whenever I feel like the hobby is going sideways, I usually take stock, pull back, and find something that excites me. I prep it, then I run it, and then come back when I'm in higher spirits. For example, I'm gearing up to run The Void (horror sci-fi inspired by Cthulhu mythos), and it's deliciously easy to hack. So I'm adding in a damage system I'm working on from my own game. I just leave the "biz" side on the table to pick up later when I'm in the mood.

JM - I hope you find some answers here. I also hope you calm down. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the drunk Buffalo roller-skate around with his agenda hanging out, but it's likely not sustainable.

With love,

This site is all about the OSR.  Yes other rpgs are talked about here, but the main deal is OSR/OSR similar games.  You just walked into a hornets nest.

Quote from: Shasarak;1144747My favourite was when the Traveler character died during character creation.

You never see that kind of genius anymore.

I know right! That particular genius was lightening in a bottle.

It was so hilarious that I grabbed the dice and rolled another character that died during chargen. Goddamn brilliant!
The more clichéd my group plays their characters, the better. I don't want Deep Drama™ and Real Acting™ in the precious few hours away from my family and job. I want cheap thrills, constant action, involved-but-not-super-complex plots, and cheesy but lovable characters.

I never once said I needed new rules.
I also told you this thread wasn't about what you think it is.
My problem is your presumptions.

 Same goes for you.
Chill out dude. Greentongue just said your gaming context may not be favorable to your tastes. There's no offense in that.

Have you tried playing online through Discord or Roll20 or something? Maybe you find people with similar interests that can play with you there. Look at Reddit or RPGnet or places you think other people with similar tastes visit.

Quote from: JMiskimen;1144724It really makes it hard to find a table to game with....I used to like D&D when it was still D&D and not completely hijacked by companies, experts, & pundits alike that preferred to dictate to me why their revisionism was so much better than what I was playing before. I don't know, but my old books still read and play fine.

Wait, you are having a hard time finding a table to game with...a prior edition of D&D using just your old books?

Really? That seems like it would be one of the easier things to find, for whatever prior edition it is you liked. They all remain more popular than most games out there.

Imagine a guy, he is burned out bad by RPGs.  His friends tell, come on just one little wafer of Traveler, just for tonight.

So he sits down and picks up the old dice for one last time.

Five minutes and one dead character later he is out sitting in the car playing on his phone until his friends finish having fun.

Now that is old school.

I think this guy was just trolling and a bunch of people fell for it.

I do, however, have some similar feelings about OSR --- but without the bad attitude.

I've never liked d20 games and really don't understand why they remain a dominant force in RPGs half a century into the hobby.  I get them being popular in the beginning when the hobby was new, but now that there are so many mechanics out there I cannot understand why the 6 stat d20 formula remains so popular.  The main reason I don't like d20 games is because the d20 is so swingy.  I really prefer a game mechanic that has a bell curve to the results.  That being said, I don't begrudge people who do like d20 and OSR games -- I'm actually jealous of those people, because there's so much more material out there for those folks.

That's right - come out swinging ...
18 posts in, and you've got it all figured out ... the hubris and desire to be self important here are often as thick as the bullshit.

Whined? No, but I have called people for what and who they are. I am a troll of the worst order because I called your sacred cow for what it is and that bothers you enough to post in my little experiment to prove me right.
