I just wanted to play the Lion king! (RPGNET vent)

A bit of set up: I tried to break into tabletop rpgs for years, I have been interested since I gotten the Denver books for Shadowrun from Goodwill thinking they were PC games, I was honestly a bit disappointed but like reading the setting and wanted to find more. For years I picked up other books, things from Hunter The reckoning and Don't rest your head to Attack Of the Humans and Soap, and trying to find a group in the middle of rural Texas kind of made playing really, really hard to pull off.

So I decided to try my luck online, I found the most "popular" site called RPGnet. And honestly it was a massive mistake.

Well, I did try other places like Reddit and Discord but it all felt like they were just RPGnet run offs, the same mentality and the same kind of people.

I often feel like an outsider when it comes to rpgs because of three things, I love animation, not just anime but Disney (both movie and tv), Warner Brothers, Fletcher, Chuck Jones, Fritz, Hanna Barbara, and so much more, and I have this habit of wanting to play something like them, to ignore "realism" for something cool, something powerful and dynamic which flows into issue two, I'm a furry, I would love to play a furry race when I can, and no I do not want to hump everything in game or out, I just want to have fun, thing three is I don't like typical high fantasy settings.

I'm kind of rambling but I am very tired of hiding who I am, I don't like politics and just want to enjoy games as games. I was banned from RPGnet because I was looking for tips to run a Lion King game session, as in the first two animated movies, no sex, no gore, just a silly adventure within a Disney Property. What I got instead? How can we make this realistic and dark? They ignored what I wanted and started in with magic that made animals talk, and how breeding would happen, and a very brutal system, and when I chimed in to remind them I just wanted a sweet and simple system to run it, I could live without explaining anything. That caused a nasty back and forth before I was banned for call them a bunch of banana brained fuck farts, actually I don't remember what I called them because this was a long time ago but I think is close.

On a side note something I find very odd is I keep finding RPG horror stories about a player or DM wanting to have sex in game to various degrees, which I can understand can be uncomfortable to many people and a lot of people have not wanting to hear porn fantasies, but I find it weird that I don't want to hear about child murder in vivid details, but told to "grow up" and "this is an adult game for adults" and "if you don't like it, leave!"

I often find those kinds of players will flip out and go right to R/horrorstories if anyone attempts flirting with an npc, and not even roleplay it but go, "I flirt with the bar wench to hear some rumors" will cause topics like "furry tried to hire a hooker!", "Bard wanted an orgy!", and "Anime weeb DM okays waifu porn!"

Sorry to ramble, I just had to get that off of my chest, and wonder if anyone else had the same kind of experiences in these groups.

"Bunch of bannana brained fuck tarts," sounds apt.

Non-violent stuff is usually more in the domains of a storytelling game than the traditional rpgs. The genre overlaps a lot, but usually RPG tend to emphasize their wargaming roots and usually don't do non-violence well. I guess you can do it depending on the system and how much supplements available to you to conceive that type of game; a campaign with just exploration or base management in Pathfinder, for example.  Although I recommend buying a system specifically made for non-violence is better. Something like Golden Sky might be close to what you want (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/118784/Golden-Sky-Stories?src=also_purchased).

You living in rural texas, into furry, and no others players to play with non-digitally, I dunno how to solve that. If you're still young you could try making a club at school or something, or taking the time to go to the closest LGS (even if its like 1-2 hour drive/commute) for some head hunting and networking.

I do recommend broadening your genre starting out though, because honestly what you want to run is pretty niche for other people to go into straight away.

Welcome. Things are a little rough and tumble here but I think it's a lot healthier than a lot of other RPG sites where you basically can feel an axe hanging over your neck if you dare to express an un-PC opinion. Fuck that.

Lion King themed RPG sounds like a fun idea.

Congratulations, OP; that was the password for this place!!!

Welcome aboard!!!

My tastes in games are far different from yours, but you can probably find a fit here.

Welcome to the site.

As for playing an animal themed RPG. There are a few that can do this to some degree or another. One of the oldest is of course Bunnies & Burrows. which later was re-released for gurps.

In the indie side there are ones lime Tales from the Woods and Praire Dogs Life.

Then there are the ones that bridge the gap between animals and beast folk. The more traditional style as shown in shows like Rescuers, Capitol Critters, and so on. BESM put out an expansion, Big Ears, Small Mouse, for playing these sorts of critters and that sort of cobbled together setting. And a few others like Mouse Guard and so on.

Next step up from that and you have fully anthropomorphic settins. The most notable is the original Albedo RPG based on the comic of the same name. A relatively hard sci-fi setting. On the fantasy side there are ones like Ironclaw and such. And in between that Furry Pirates which is a rather well done historically accurate age of sail RPG done with Disney Robin Hood style animal people.

And up from there you have the fantasy races that populate many RPGs going all the way back to D&D and then Metamorphosis Alpha and especially Gamma World. Or obscure ones like Justifiers.

Then theres the oddball ones for playing cartoon characters. Toon from SJG is a prime example, BESMouse being another.

Really depends on what you want to play and some systems can handle this stuff alot better than others.

Hi and welcome to the boards!  My daughter enjoys the same things you do (minus the actually being a furry part), but she and her friends mostly freeform roleplay them.  Basically, they each say what they're doing and and if there are disagreements about how something resolves they discuss them until they do agree.  I prefer actual game systems but they like it their way and that's great.  I can't give much advice about actual systems except to say that I've heard good things about Mouse Guard.  Not sure that's what you're looking for though, since I've read the books and they're far from nonviolent.  Oh, and Toon is wonderful for Bug Bunny type slapstick cartoon comedy - I've played it maybe a dozen time.  Honestly your best bet is to find some like minded folk who have been playing RPGs the way you want and play along with them.  Hopefully you can find some here.

Why do furries always insist on making this known? If somebody is into BDSM, I will find out if I break into their basement.
If somebody is a furry, this is the first (or in this case second) thing they tell you.
And I generally like playing monsters whenever given the opportunity (anthropomorphic or otherwise).

If you maybe didn't make your kink the front and center of your identity, there would be less mocking overall (in my opinion).

Sans that, I also like animation. Welcome.

I hate anime. The art style I mean, the look of it. Other than like 5 minutes of dragonballZ or airbender the only other anime i've actually analyzed was on vhs back in the 90's and was the wierdest most disjointed crap you could imagine and featured no shit alien worm tentacle sex with exploding orgasms that kill the subject and recalling now it is ultra creepy because all those girls sounded just like pikachu. same facial expressions to.

I hate anime.

Welcome to the Mos Eisley Cantina of gaming forums!

As far as game systems go that could handle what you want to play, I'll suggest an older game called Teenagers From Outer Space which is a light "beer and pretzels" anime comedy game published by R. Talsorian Games. It is versatile and robust enough to be able to handle what you are looking for.

Basing your views on Anime from watching Urutskidoji: Legend of the overfiend would be like basing your view of RPGs from trying to play F.A.T.A.L

Maybe you should have tried something like Osamu Tekuza (the Walt Disney of Japan) or why not Hayao Miyazaki instead. The latter ones "Spirited Away" even got an Oscar for best Animated feature in 2002-

Once you post your ideas on the internets, expect them to get stapled, folded, mutilated and otherwise bent all out of recognition.

Welcome to the board. I hope you find people interested in what you're after, RPG wise.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

Your tastes are your tastes, of course; can't criticize that.  But your reasoning here is the single dumbest thing I've read on this forum.  Anime includes an immense breadth of styles and you're judging the whole thing based on a few minutes of garbage?  Also, way to make the new guy feel welcome on the forum.

Slipshot762

Meh be welcome and all sure, but I hate anime. The art style just doesn't do it for me and works against the possibility of my acceptance of it.

Do you mean animation in general? Some people just find 2D unsettling. There are plenty of things to dislike and hate in anime, which I get, but im confused about the general all rounded hatred when you say you barely watched any of it.

Its like saying you hate fruits but said you only ever tasted half a burnt orange.
