This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I just stumbled into a cache of really old games...

Melee, Wizard and ITL is all you need.

Advanced Melee and Advanced Wizard offers additional rules that I didn't like but I like simplicity and speed in games.

Another option for your Melee/Wizard fix is Dark City Games (http://www.darkcitygames.com). They have produced a free downloadable  set of rules (Legends of the Ancient World) that are 99% compatible with Melee/Wizard. This ruleset powers their series of Programmed Adventures (solo games). Quick and easy to play. Plus they were a great bunch to meet at GenCon last year.

Thanks!

AM, Advanced Melee & Advanced Wizard are a bit hard to "get" IMO without the basic versions. You can use the basic versions plus ITL and have a complete RP game.

Most of the adventures are good to great.

I didn't know this guy was selling without having the rights. But he clearly doesn't have the rights to the Metagaming stuff, nobody could possibly (except Howard Thompson) without it being fairly big news.

There's a web site out there with nearly all of the TFT stuff on PDF for free. It's not hard to find.

PS. with Metagaming, later editions are always better. They never horribilized their stuff, they just fixed typos and tweaked broken rules into perfection. (E.g. in original Ogre, heavy tanks had a speed of 2 and GEVs moved 4*4 IIRC, and those quickly led to game-breaking strategies. Next printing/edition upped heavy tanks to speed 3 and GEVs to 4*3, and it's stayed that way forever.)

I feel guilty, for IIRC it was I who spread that link to begin with. The site did look legit, if slightly odd.

I totally thought it was too!

Well, if I can find The Fantasy Trip somewheres else, maybe that will do. I also found a really great Dragonquest community.

Edit: found it:

You might have an easier time getting TFT from Crazy Egor's used Games booth at Gen*con. (thats the actual name of the guy's booth)
I think Egor has a website - but I KINOW they are much more hones and will search for things if you ask them to .

Since Melee and Wizard are almost the unacknowledged grandparents of GURPS - I'd love to get a copy of them myself someday. Almost did when I was 13 - now I wish I had.

As far as I can tell, no.  But that wouldn't stop T&T7 from being awesome, would it?

Well, it's written by Ken St Andre, so the geek cred doesn't get much better...and it's a good game. But 5/5.5 is the Grognard's Choice if you have to choose one version of T&T.

You can shake your fists at the sky. You can do a rain dance. You can ignore the clouds completely. But none of them move the clouds.
