This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I hate Clerics - What OSR/Retros do without them?

Quote from: Baron;647395Hmm. But I've found that most players (or even non-players) can define good and evil relative to a specific culture without too much difficulty.

I tend to agree with apparition13; many (most?) gamer arguments are about definitions of Law vs Chaos, and the relevant behavior, rather than the Good/Evil axis.

Sersiously?! It seems like law is law and chaos is chaos.  Whereas there's all kinds of potential ambiguities in "good" or "evil".

This discussion has moved here: Law and Chaos as "real things".

But I'm interested in your reply. I can say "gloop is gloop, and florp is florp", but unless you know what I mean by "gloop" and "florp", you won't understand me. So what do you mean by "law" and "chaos", and how are they less ambiguous than good or evil?

Law is the universal tendency toward order and structure; chaos the universal tendency toward entropy and decay.  These are real universal forces, things seen in nature and not just in man, so I take them to be far more unambiguous than "good" and "evil".

Update - for my upcoming ACKS game, we'll be using an all gender version of the priestess class from the Companion, as well as Bladedancer. Thanks everyone for your input so far.
Rules and design matter
The players are in charge
Simulation is narrative
Storygames are RPGs

How does that work in play? How do you roleplay a lawful N/PC differently than a chaotic one?

I think this line of discussion is best continued over on the other thread; ask me there, if you like.
