This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: JRT;820241Part of the problem is that The Strange recursions are not based on alternate worlds, but alternate worlds amalgamated from the imaginations of people on earth, so having a more stereotypical or archetypal depiction is more fitting to the realm.

As for the whole SJW discussion, a few days ago there was an actual interesting dialog between Patton Oswalt and Salon about this subject, especially since PO feels Salon is becoming a little too much like the SJW view.  It's a really interesting article, so I wanted to share the link.

Yeah that's the part that gets me...the fact that, as usual, the Outrage Brigade completely misrepresents what they are complaining about.

Take...
Group 1 = Culture A
Group 2 = The rest of the world that is not Culture A
Now make a fantasy dimension based on the collective imagination of Group 1 and Group 2.

Which is likely to be the predominate creative force in that dimension, the minds of the people in the actual culture or the other 7 billion human minds?

Yeah, the "Native American" dimension will be a generic amalgamation.
So will the Viking dimension.
So will the Elizabethan dimension.
So will the Victorian dimension.
So will the Greek dimension.
So will the Roman dimension.
So will every other "white" culture dimension you can think of, so get the fuck over yourself.

This vile practice is called "Zakism", AND IT CANNOT BE TOLERATED.

Meanwhile, this form of argument was identified long ago as Bulverism, and it is one of the besetting problems of this Age of Unreason. :)

I have no knowledge of The Strange (not even the secondhand knowledge I often pick up of many games), and so cannot comment on the critique itself, although my reflex reaction is to be suspicious of any claim of 'racism'. Doesn't sound like there's much, if anything, to it.

I will say that, as a practicing Catholic and specialist in medieval theology, I could have all sorts of fun using these concepts of 'appropriation' and 'erasure' to criticize the two biggest games in the hobby's history (D&D and Vampire), if I had a mind. :D

But this talk about 'appropriation' strikes me as 10% authentic respect for others and 90% the next stage in our contemporary move towards postmodernist solipsism--There is no truth, we cannot even communicate truly with each other, so we are all gods of our own little realities and must either leave one another alone under the rubric of 'tolerance' or live "on a darkling plain ... where ignorant armies clash by night".

Exactly. Hell, there should be a dimension ruled by evil White Guys in Suits for that matter or an ultra decadent America where everyone has 20 guns and lives in an Endless New York, except for those that live in Endless L.A. or in the vast insane hillbilly haunted wilderness between them.

This is what I mean about the potential to choke off creativity that all the "social justice" outrage can create. I think this is cool idea. I love alternate universes and having a setting where they're explicitly create by the mass imagination is very cool twist on the idea. But instead of evaluating the idea on its own merit and stated intent we get this.

I'm not even saying the idea couldn't be handled in an insulting or bigoted manner, but it doesn't seem like that's what happened.

Edit: I forgot the cowboys. Recursion 'Murica needs lots of Cowboy and rogue cops.

But proving once again that there's no such thing as bad publicity, I forwarded that link to several people in my group and circle of friends and now they're very interested in checking out a game they'd never heard of before.

Wow...such stuff is for real?

*sigh* ... well, if you want to waste your precious mortal-lifetime on such things...be my guest. Probably better than what they would do otherwise.

I mean how out-of-reality do you have to be to make such a fuss about a GAME.

Don't like it? Don't buy it. It's that easy.

And if you think you can tell other people what is ok/not ok (and/or can be bought/played/what-have-you), then you're part of the problem and the only thing that fits to all you say is : STFU!

This thread will have more posts than the petition will have signatures.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

I swear, if I see one more SJW diatribe about cultural appropriation written in English, on a computer, using electricity, and posted on the Internet I'm going to hurl.

It's their hallmark... all "Self" and no "Awareness".

I'm a registered, card-carrying member of the Cherokee Nation.  When I clicked on the link, I thought the petition was a joke, and it took reading the rest of this thread to realize it is in earnest.

Can't say I'm offended or harmed in any way.  If somebody wants to get all bunged up over this stuff, I guess they'll do so.

Whatever.

i am a bit disappointed. i thought this was about raggi endorsing a nazi. considering this place has it's own ww2-warcrime-expert, the discussion should be...

interesting.

Nice choice of words, "endorsing a nazi"...
Yeah, but who gives a fuck? You? Jibba?

Well congrats. No one else gives a shit, so your arguments are a waste of breath.

What a deliberate and unnecessary bit of trolling.

So has anyone here read The Strange and the Thunder Plains setting?

I haven't yet.

shlominus

considering his position in the osr, by giving him public exposure, he is endorsing him. this post will most likely result in sales for his game.

"varg is OSR."

i call that an endorsement.

obviously it's just another raggi-publicitystunt to get the usual suspects riled up, but the fact of the matter is that varg vikernes is a nazi (and a convicted murderer).

you can think and talk about that, or you can consider someone informing you of something relevant to the hobby as trolling. your coice.

TristramEvans

I'll consider the fact that Shlominus' entire posting history here has had nothing to do with RPGs and only him jumping in to argue about controversies. And then I'll use my very rarely touched ignore list for an obvious troll once again being obvious.

Planet Algol

What I came away with that was "Hey, look guys, this notorious crazy infamous persons has been making YouTube videos about rpgs... ...and hey, author of basic fantasy he says you made the best version of D&D. Isn't that crazy?"

Like he has an obligation to pretend it doesn't exist so people don't find out about it? Give me a fucking break.
