I just came to the realization I dont like running Fantasy games, specifically high fantasy games, D&D, Palladium, Fantasy Hero, etc... however I like to play in them.

It seems I would much rather run a Pulp game or a Cyberpunk game

I don't like running Fantasy, but I'll play in one anytime. OTOH, I love running and playing Sci-fi or Horror. :what:

Huh. I've got a bit of an opposite feeling myself. I like to run fantasy more than other generes, mostly because you can do a lot of handwaving and say "It's magic". With things like sci-fi, or even cyberpunk, I find my players expecting more verisimilitude and get fed up quickly. I love playing in sci-fi and cyberpunk, but have trouble running them.

Pulp, I just don't get, on either side of the table.

More constructive: What isn't High Fantasy giving you that you can get out of cyberpunk and pulp? Are it purely aesthetic reasons, or is there something more profound? And have you tried other kinds of fantasy? (Sword&sorcery, low magic, ancient tales, what do I know...)

I'd like to make a suggestion if I could:

don't run fantasy.

maybe its the background. I'm a history buff as such a lot of the work for games based on the old west, the middle ages or the 1930s has already been done. for cyberpunk, its just an extension of the current world

then again maybe its the power level, becasue I like WHFRP, but Im not sure if that is it either becasue I like Super hero games...

When ever I run a "Fantasy" setting game, I always end up introducing Super-Ultra-High-Tech anyways. So I can relate. Generic Fantasy bores me to tears to run. But I do not mind Playing it.

I've been looking into IRON HEROES a Low Magic Fantasy Setting to see how I'd like that. I am a HUGE Dark*Sun fan, and I loved it's lower magic levels and gritty setting. Maybe Iron Heroes will fill that need somewhat.

I've also been looking into Ravenloft. I used to love the old version playing it. Never ran it though. Might end up buying AD&D version and the WW's D20 version to check it out better.

I normally run SCI_FI games myself or Supers or Supernatural Horror games. (White Wolf oWoD, Aberrant, Adventure!, Buffy-Angel, CP2020, GURPS).

Hey I'd suggest trying LOW Fantasy instead of High Fantasy to see if it is just Fantasy in general.

I find myself always coming back to fantasy.  Often I'll go on a tangent in another genre, start writing and adventure, and then realize I can do it better with fantasy and change over.  I guess it's because I always like a bit of the fantastic or "supernatural" in all my adventures.  I also like the simplicity of fantasy, as far as technology and such...probably why I prefer Star Wars for Science fiction (Sci fantasy) as opposed to "harder" games like Traveler.

In my Sci-Fi game I always introduce "magic" of some sort, Monsters as Alien races of course. In Fantasy I introduce the tech aspects here and there somehow. Sci-Fantasy is a great tag. Thank you grubman.

All my fantasy games turn into science fantasy as well. i just like the gonzo anyhting goes nature of the genre.

Jack Vance's Dying Earth is a really good example of fiction thaat blends fantasy and science fiction elements.

Yeah... I can't seem to play either game straight. I end up wanting guns and robots and stuff in my fantasy games and magic (psionics) and melee in my scifi.
