This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

How would you run League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?
« on: October 29, 2021, 02:17:25 PM »
It's been a while since I read the comics and saw the film, but the basic premise is pretty cool. Everyone plays an extraordinary character based on (or inspired by) literature from about 100-150 years ago. It's all very steam punk, but also very much set in its era (not so much modern sensibilities nor mixed with D&D fantasy)

How would you run such a game?

I have been giving this some thought for a while and if I got the chance to run it, I would probably use Call of Cthulhu Pulp with the setting in Cthulhu by Gaslight.

In case you know: How does that one compare to Astounding Adventures? (also by Chaosium)

Now this is an awesome question in my opinion. Some musings on this:

How much gonzo is enough? Should the adversaries of the league only be inspired by existing villains and their aftereffects or can outside canon be introduced? Must the whole thing adhere to the model the movie and the comics presented, may the players extrapolate their own deviations from the established characters cannon? What should the tone be like, serious in its presentation like in the comics, with some ugly realism/fridge horror thrown into the mix?

On another note, the french jeu de role ''Brigade Chimerique'' is very similar to the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, concentrating on the ''superheroes of europe'' and their existance between the world wars. The ''forgotten history'' angle is what drew me into that game.

I might go Savage Worlds Dead Lands reloaded, or Space 1889 Red Sands, but stay on earth. Savage Worlds is great at pulp.

Or Devi's Gulch for a more western flair. Astounding Adventures is more 30's pulp, but easy to adapt.

I think both are out of print if you want physical copies.

As straight from the comics as possible, you'll need Mr Hyde, a Vampire, Nemo, Quattermain, the invisible man.

The Vampire is easy, there's lots of vampire races out there to choose from.

Nemo... A two fisted scientist, if you need a weird science gadgets table let me know, I have one.

Quattermain: The great white hunter, change it to hunter and you're done.

The Invisible man... Drawing a blank here, since it has to be nude to be invisible I guess it's not really OP, A mix between chemist/thief?

Mr Hyde... Chemist, Shapeshifter, https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/242725/PC15--The-OSR-Chymist

Now create a world threat, a secret organization, and have it recruit the PCs.

A: Complain about other peoples lack of creativity and about a lack of respect for my creations.
B: Use already existing characters and have them fuck each other or animals if possible.
C: Whine about dem kids some more.

TBH I'd totally dig some mix of League and Penny Dreadful. And while I dislike Moore, I'd probably too be irreverent towards Captain Nemo canon (for once I'd make him Polish again)
