This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Nice video. I think your point around using the right type of random table is super important. It took me a long time to recognize that years and years (and years) ago when I started creating my own campaigns.

I also agree with the value of the appendixes in the original DMG. Great tools. The reverse shout out to Appendix N was a nice touch.

One area that is probably hard to articulate is how to balance their use. They are an important part of my prep, and add a fair amount of surprise and variety, even for me, when I am running games. But I’ve also gone overboard in the past, and it felt like I was just pulling random crap out of a hat all night. So there is a sweet spot. Hard to quantify.
