Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: jhkim;630648How is this shifting goalposts?  My original comment was that I'd like to see "a good kick-ass action movie with a gay hero".  I'm sticking exactly by that.

And you are determined to be unsatisfied with any examples given unless you get your special snowflake defined thing. So you have set it up to remain unsatisfied. Congrats.
"Meh."

One of our Ptolus characters was gay. Another was bi. But I don't think of it as either a big deal or some show of moral quality relating to the game or anything like that. It just showed up in a sort of matter-of-fact way. One of the players just said "btw my character is gay" and I just went "OK." It later did play out when seeking to spend the night with some wenches at the inn and the like, but again, no big deal.

So it shows up. Or not. I'm cool with it either way.

Ah.  Language problems here:  "special snowflake" is different than "shifting goalposts".  The "shifting goalpost" claim suggests that I changed my conditions in the middle of the discussion, which I didn't.

I certainly did state my original about something that I've never seen and that I considered unlikely to have ever happened, but that I'd like to see.  I'm fine with calling that "special snowflake".

Erstwhile - I just got Boondock Saints on Netflix, but haven't watched it yet.

Whether that was intentional or not, I do not know, but it does look like you shifted the goalposts, John.

Quote from: jhkim;630157I'm not trying to say that there are no good gay characters anywhere in film and television, but that I'd specifically like to see a real action movie hero who is gay.

One of those statements does not mean the exact same thing than the other. Your original wish, to see "a good kick-ass action movie with a gay hero" is addressed by the examples given by the others, because shows or movies that feature multiple heroes, including some who are gay, would qualify, whereas if you say that you'd like to see a "real action movie hero" as in "action hero" that is the ONE character of a kick-butt movie like say John McClane and the like, then the examples don't qualify.

Do you see how the two statements can be interpreted differently?

You are in for a treat. It is a bit dated already but lots of fun. Keep an eye out for the funny fan.

OK, sure.  There are multiple meanings of the term "hero". One is the primary protagonist or protagonists of the story who are strong and moral, like John McClane, Riggs and Murtaugh, etc.   Another is any character with heroic qualities - i.e. strong and moral - like Obi Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars movie.

I wrote my original statement meaning John McClane and the like, but I can see how someone would misread it as the latter.  It's not like this meaning is an obscure or rare one, though.  Anyway, apologies for any confusion.

Cool.  I love the hell out of that movie.  I will warn you, given the discussion, that Dafoe's character is a strong secondary character, but still a secondary character.  But he is clearly gay, a fucking jerk, and really good at his job.

Ahm ready to get bus-ay!

Great movie, and Dafoe did his job well. He looks exactly the same now as then, I guess when you max level that's where you stay, like Sean Connery.

You guys should be in every major city.

Guys, again, PLEASE get back on topic.  That is, the topic of homosexuality in your campaign settings; not in movies, TV, or the Space Program.

I played a great Live Action game once based around relationships. It was a housewarming and the entire character brief (pregenn'd by the GM) was dominated by current and past relationships, with a bit of colour on the side (like my professional coke dealing). There were heteronormative relationships, out gay relationships, asexual life partner relationships, implied UST between all gender combinations, etc. All we did was talk and act out interpersonal dramas.

I could have played that game all day, but it was unfortunately spoiled by terrorists bursting in through the front door and some Lovecraftian horror trying to suck everyones' brains dry. Bear in mind we were in the middle of nowhere on holiday and everyone was accounted for; the GM had persuaded a bunch of his other friends to drive out for the day and play the part of the terrorists. They came in with replica guns, balaclavas and army fatigues.

In the ensuing hostage situation it was clear that gender, sexual preference and so on were pretty irrelevant, and those characters who would be action heroes were indeed action heroes.

In my games, homosexual NPCs, and more rarely PCs have shown up relatively frequently, to a response of "no big deal".

Most recently, in Albion one of the PCs is playing a knight (Sir Alfred Boleyn) who has become romantically attached (in secret, obviously, since we are playing within the construct of the historical culture) to Prince George, Duke of Clarence.  George knighted him and brought him into his inner circle of trusted men, because of his attraction to the knight; ironically, both Sir Alfred and the Prince have a reputation of being great ladies' men, to the point of being almost scandalous, but in both cases its really part of their attempt to cover up their real interests.

Also, in my Golden Age campaign, the PC's team had the first Firebrand as one of its members; and Firebrand's fairly obvious life-partner Slugger Dunn as their unofficial HQ-groundskeeper.  Firebrand was not "open" by modern standards, but by 1940s NY standards, in the sense that no one ever spoke about it openly but everyone on the team knew anyways; he was a "confirmed bachelor" if the subject came up.  The PCs valued him in the team and when he became one of the first masked men to die in action (as the only guy left to protect NYC on the same day as the Pearl Harbor attack) the team mourned his loss, and made a point of looking after his younger sister, who eventually became the second Firebrand.
