Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Quote from: jibbajibba;524845its one of the reasons why I would use the MtG Settigns for D&D settings. They are well worked out, popular with players, details , great artwork.... etc you can easily take the work the MtG guys already did and port it out in a setting with its own mechanics.

One word , a setting I would buy:

RAVNICA

That city had such excellant artwork portraying it that I kept hoping WOTC was going to release a map of the city or a scenario that took place there.

The concept of a worldwide city with Powerful guilds secretly waring with each other is pretty cool anyway and the images sure are pretty

I have always been a fan of uncomplicated RPGs that have a story, something to get your teeth into.  But not everyone wants to sit down and play a campaign that could take months to complete, but on the other side of the coin not everyone wants a 'quick' game.  The industry has more players and more variety than the early days.  There is something for everyone.

I am looking for gamers to play test my new adventure game book.  Its a 4 part epic, but is broken down into a series of scenarios that make up a story.  I am writing book two at the mo but require experienced gamers to tell me what they think before I publish with full artwork later in the year.  The initial download is only NZ$10.  Give me some good input and I will acknowledge it in the book.

The "hobby" seems just about right to me the last few years. No shortage of games or people to play them with. And... large enough to make a decent living for some and worth while for many others.

I like to compare it to bass fishing. If you can find a good spot to cast your line and drink a beer with a good friend and find you're having a good time...? Who cares if everyone's not into it?

I can only play with four to six people at a time anyway. ;)

My father would have loved you for the reference to fishing alone.  But you have it exactly right, as Clint Eastwood said "a man has just got to know their limitations".

Quote from: RPGPundit;524791Yes. And for that matter I think a lot of the OSR-people are vastly overestimating their distance from the D&D brand.  There's a good reason why the OSR became much, much bigger after 4e; and that's because you could still do something vaguely resembling old-school play with 3e, whereas with 4e it was much harder.

I'm sure this played a role, but it is hardly the only factor; as we've discussed before the OSR has good PR (otherwise known as visible and genuine enthusiasm) appeals to the DIY folks (e.g., me) and the thing about the old games is that for every guy like Black Vulmea, Ben or TDD who read and played the game as it was meant to be played when they were young, there are like 10 who either did not read the game or misread the game and never really got it until they made their second run at it much later (e.g., me again and lots and lots of others). And, really, there are plenty of guys who drifted into it because they were dissatisfied with 3e. After all, man, 3e is still out there and being supported, as PF. If former 3e OS guys wanted to use it, I assume that's what they'd be doing.
That is to say the OSR, as it stands today, is the product of many processes not just the release of 4e.

Well of course, it certainly is.  I'm just saying one of those factors was the 4e era at WoTC.

I am hoping that 5e will reunite the clans.

You have far higher hopes than I, 1989. I just want it to be a fun, affordable game with flexibility while also mildly humoring my nostalgia.

... and that, too, may be too tall of an order for WotC/Hasbro.

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Yeah, like I've said before ...I want 5e to be fun, solid, and all its own. I have no use for a rehash of any of the following, 0e, 1e, 2e, 3e, or 4e. Mix and Match as you will.  But you better hide the 4e elements or no sale.:)

Insofar as it scratches an itch that any second fantasy RPG does, I hope it succeeds.  It can sit on the bookshelf with WHFRP and a few others and fill the need when it arises to play a fantasy RPG that isn't AD&D - rare times, but still.

If it does that well, if it does that to the point that I don't think the designers* are hocking loogies onto older versions of D&D, it will be a Good Thing.

Since I've got the current alpha rules and am in a playtest group, so far what I've seen is a Good Thing.  A good D&D.

Take away what you will from that.
