This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"had Dragon remained a general gaming magazine we would all have had subscriptions."

Walker quipped this. Seeing as I didn't have a subscription, nor did I intend to get one, I am curious just how out of the norm I am in this little corner of the internet.

Long ago when there was a TSR and not an Alternity(sp?).

I've also bought them off the shelf, and was thinking of subscribing.... mabye....

If White Dwarf had remained a general gaming magazine I would have continued my subscription. I'm one of the odd ones who liked mid 80's to right before 3E ,Dragon. Dungeon on the other hand just got better as the years rolled on IMO.

I used to subscribe, but drifted away shortly after they entirely ceased covering non-TSR/Wizards games. In fact, ISTR I was a subscriber when TSR went under - luckily, Wizards honoured all the subscriptions.
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

I bought them every month I was running AD&D, Alternity, d20, and Castles & Crusades.

I think a "general" gaming magazine would be impossible to do and a ludicrous business venture.

Gaming magazines should be basically house organs (Like Dragon was, not current White Dwarf) with exciting and useful content.  The idea that you could make a magazine that covered anything wider than a genre is ridiculous.  A general gaming magazine would have very little game content, and be forced to be so generic as to be almost useless...an inspirational magazine, so to speak.

I think there should be better magazines out there for the gaming industry, and Dragon was a phenomenal magazine, physically, that sometimes didn't offer a lot of decent content.

I've bought Dragon but had a subscription only to Dungeon.  It was quite a bargain at times, especially at the beginning of 3E when it was combined with Polyhedron and had mini games.

I dunno. Before I was really back in D&D, we had Shadis and I'd pick that up every once in a while, but nah.

The reason Dragon is made for D&D players is because there's a whole bunch of D&D players. If someone made a general magazine of roleplaying it would have a circulation of like 9 guys.

On the other hand, it's a lot cheaper to publish stuff now.

Also, this poll left off the option:  " I'm going to get D&D Insider and it comes with subscriptions to both Dungeon and Dragon."
Download Secret Santicore! (10MB). I painted the cover :)

Serious Paul

Never subscribed or purchased it. I kind of wouldn't mind reading the if they were given to me for free.

True, that is an option I missed. But there is more than one person here that intends on doing that? ;)  D&D 4e gets a rough ride here as it is. I'm in the minority that are positive about it at all and I have no plans to even buy the core books.

I used to buy DRAGON magazine at the local KROGER grocery store.

Also, I LOVED the "Maps of Mystery" that were in DUNGEON  - those weren't game specific, so theoretically I could use those with ANY game system.

PC Portraits was another regular feature that I loved.

Put thart kind of stuff v oin a monthly magazine that also blended the best parts of SHADIS and PYRAMID - and I'd buy it. Lots of the regular customers at the store would too.

...Can I change my answer ?? - I now remember That I DID subscribe to DUNGEON for awhile in 2000 or 2001.

I used to buy Dragon regularly when I was a kid in the early 80s, but never got around to getting a subscription.  Keep in mind this was before the age of the internet--buying Dragon back then felt more like you were keeping in touch with the gaming community at large.

I'm not "hopping mad", but I do think it's the end of an era. And I look at my Dragon collection as a survival kit for the 4e era.

Though I do remember the days when there was coverage of other games, I don't think that was all it's cracked up to be. As time went on, the chance of correlation between games that were supported and games I cared about got lower and lower. By now with dozens of games on the market? I have to say I have a hard time thinking of it as anything but a waste of space.

It would have been cool in the 3e era if they had at least covered their alternate RPG lines (Star Wars and D20 Modern).

Running: Pathfinder Scarred Lands, Mutants & Masterminds, Masks, Starfinder, Bulldogs!
Playing: Sigh. Nothing.
Planning: Some Cyberpunk thing, system TBD.

I had a subscription for a long while (I was a huge AD&D2E fan), as they weaned away the other support (even for their own products), I eventually dropped it.

I'll go one further- I always thought Dragon was fairly crappy as a general gaming magazine, comparing poorly to the likes of White Dwarf or Arcane. Once it shifted it's focus exclusively to D&D I felt it improved a great deal, and despite the occasional dip maintained good levels of quality and utility throughout.
