This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The purveyors of RQ just need to astro-turf some OSR-style bullshit and perhaps Glorantha will enjoy a revival.

--- I'd also note that the Second Age stuff from a few years ago never seemed to inspire much internet chatter, not at the big sites anyway.
Don\'t forget rule no. 2, noobs. Seriously, just don\'t post there. Those guys are nuts.

Speak your mind here without fear! They\'ll just lock the thread anyway.

Moon Design purchased Glorantha from Greg Stafford (and Greg happily sold it to us) because we fully intend to expand its place in the world of gaming. We intend to make it more accessible, more available, and more prominent. We know that is not an overnight process; we must build it up over time.  We want more people using Glorantha as their gaming world, and want to provide the option of experiencing it through computer games, board games, books, miniatures, and so on. It also means setting up better distribution, more convention support, more free demos, etc.

That might make you ask for an example
It means creating a lot more material for Glorantha. The next product that will be available in a few months is The Guide to Glorantha. It details the Geography, History, and similar for the entire world of Glorantha, not just the most commonly detailed regions done in the past. It is presented without reference to any RPG rules system. We have intentionally done that and will continue to do that with a number of our core publications because we want to make Gloranthan information available for use with any RPG rules system.

As for "not being interested in Glorantha"
We neither expect nor depend on everyone being interested in Glorantha. We only strive to provide more opportunities to see if you are interested, and to provide a wider range of higher quality material that makes you more likely to stay interested if you do give it a chance.

Hey Loz since you're here and you and Pete do a lot of Glorantha stuff for Moon, does this change the focus of The Design Mechanism at all re:RQ6?

Is RQ6:Glorantha a part of this new Glorantha brand renewal?

If so, what does that mean for the publishing schedule for Non-Gloranthan RQ6, seeing as how you and Pete haven't cloned yourself yet despite Akrasia and I being quite strict on that point.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Hey that's an idea!  Maybe we should start an internet petition for this to ensure a healthy production rate for RQ6, RQ6 Glorantha, and Moon Design supplements!

Maybe throw MOB, Rick Meints, and Jeff in there as well!

It doesn't change the fact that we're placing much of our effort on settings and supplements for other genres. We will for example still be publishing our own pseudo-historical Mythic line, Jonathan's Age of Treason/Thennla setting, Luther Arkwright, and other fun stuff.

However, after meeting up with Moon Design at Continuum earlier this year, we decided to push forward the production of Adventures in Glorantha in order to tie into the launch of the magnum opus Guide to Glorantha. This is what I'm currently working on at the moment, which unfortunately displaced my Mythic (Mycenaean) Greece book to next year.

We have Jeff, Rick and Neil's blessing to fully develop several areas of Glorantha, as the synergy will aid both our sales. Since Loz and I cannot admit any cloning going on, despite not living under US jurisdiction, we've engaged the services of the excellent Mike O'Brien (a name you might recognise from the RQ revival in the 90's) to produce a line of RQ6 Glorantha material, which he's highly enthusiastic about.

So Design Mechanism will support and produce RQ6 Glorantha material. Its just that Loz and I are also focussed on pushing the system as a vehicle for other settings too.  And no, I don't get much sleep nowadays... ;)

The art looks GREAT. :)

...I might give this a go after all. I mean I didn't like HeroWars/HeroQuest (well the god stuff was interesting and cool, the actual rpg stuff wasn't my style) but have always had a certain interesti in the setting.

Pete's amply covered all these points.

On the cloning issue, Akrasia and I have discussed it at length many times in the past, usually with Guinness involved, and have reach an amicable agreement on its ethical ramifications.

Wow, that art really makes Glorantha feel different and evocative.  I think it will make the setting more approachable.

My hope is that it leads to more adventures, either stand-alone or great big bloody boxed sets like in the old days. I think the main problem most observers have had with Glorantha is that there is a lot of talk about it, but not much you can actually play with.

Between the campaign arc in the Sartar Book, the scenarios and encounters in Sartar Companion, and the scenarios and encounters in Pavis, there's a tremendous amount of gameable HQ material for Glorantha. Now you might not want to play a game in Dragon Pass or Prax, but that is where at least 95% of all the Glorantha games have been set and that is the area we needed to address first (especially since it allows us to build upon the King of Dragon Pass fan base). Alternatively, you might not like the HeroQuest system - that's fine, different strokes for different folks, and that's why Loz and Pete are doing AiG.

Although it is statless and systemless, the Guide to Glorantha contains more than enough information to do sandbox gaming in the setting of Glorantha. Both of the games I ran at GenCon were run on that premise - choose a section of the map to set the game, read the relevant entries, come up with a starting hook (I'm personally a big fan of starting games in media res) and let the players run wild with it.

And with the Guide, you aren't confined to Dragon Pass or Prax, which collectively occupy less than 10% of the gazetteer text.

Sounds pretty good! :)

(Not a huge Sartar/Prax fan, but I suppose a Glorantha campaign that doesn't start centered around Sartar/Prax would be like a DC campaign that ignored Supes and Bats...;) Also helps that the art makes the locals of the area look vastly cooler and more interesting than older stuff did IMHO. :))
