This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

GREEN RONIN TO PUBLISH A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE RPG
Industry Leader to do RPG Adaptation of Best Selling Fantasy Series

April 24, 2007--SEATTLE, WA: Green Ronin Publishing has reached an agreement with New York Times bestselling author George R.R. Martin to license his fantasy epic A Song of Ice and Fire. Green Ronin will publish a roleplaying game in 2008 that will allow fans of the series to have their own exciting adventures in Westeros. Subsequent books will continue to explore the world and characters of A Song of Ice and Fire.

"A Song of Ice and Fire is the most exciting thing to happen in fantasy fiction in decades," said Green Ronin President Chris Pramas, "and we are thrilled to be able to bring it back to the gaming world."

"I've had a lot of interest in the role-playing rights to A Song of Ice and Fire since they became available once again," said George R.R. Martin. "There were days I felt like Scarlett O'Hara at the Twelve Oaks barbeque. In the end, though, the enthusiasm and professionalism of the folks at Green Ronin convinced me that was the place to go. I've seen the quality of the games that Green Ronin puts out, and the care that they put into them, and I'm eager to see what they do with the world of Westeros and A Song of Ice and Fire. I think my fans and readers will be pleased."

Green Ronin has already done successful RPG adaptations of fantasy classics like Thieves' World and the Black Company. "Creating a great RPG for A Song of Ice and Fire seemed like the perfect next step," added Pramas. "2008 is going to be a great year for fans of George R.R. Martin's work."

Sweet.

Was it GOO that had the license previously?

On the Green Ronin forums, someone asked if it would use 3.5 rules (or start where GoO left off with their brilliant version even) or go with True20.

The answer was that GR will be designing a new system for the game.
"Tony wrecks in the race because he forgot to plug his chest piece thing in. Look, I\'m as guilty as any for letting my cell phone die because I forget to plug it in before I go to bed. And while my phone is an important tool for my daily life, it is not a life-saving device that KEEPS MY HEART FROM EXPLODING. Fuck, Tony. Get your shit together, pal."

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of d20 (despite buying hundreds of dollars worth of books for it lately), but the AGoT engine was probably the most intuitive, cohesive, game system that GoO ever published. I think that ditching it in favor of YET ANOTHER totally new game system is a mistake. Even a True 20 variant makes more sense than an entirely new engine, IMO.

[Note: My reasoning is that both True 20 and the GoO AGoT engine have established fan bases, while a new system will be a complete crap shoot in terms of satisfying enough people to make it a worthwhile financial endeavor. A new system may succeed, it may not -- that said, the odds of an already successful system selling well are much, much, better.]

I agree. I thought AGoT RPG was one of the best incarnations of D20 I had read. The lower hitpoints, shock damage, reputation mechanic, low (nearly nonexistent) magic, etc.

And the best part, it very accurately recreated the feel of the books, IMO.

I agree (though I am a d20 fan).  I can see the benefits of creating a new system, but why do a lot of work you don't have to?

In the Green Ronin forum, they say that even if they wanted to use the GOO version, it would be a lot of trouble.

Well, I had hoped that SJG had got the license, even if I knew that was not going to happen (remember the report SJG showed us). Now I hope that they do a decent system, or if they're going to do a OGL version, that they do such a good OGL version as GOO did. I may not like D&D, but I admit A Game of Thrones d20 had some very good things.

I guess it was my assumption that the GoO AGoT used the new high roll system that GoO was useing for BESM3. Is that not the case then?

You're right. The tri-stat version used in AGOT was roll-over.

Since I'm not a big fan of d20, it's ok, it is good new to hear that they are working on a new system.
