This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Gratuitous Mecha?

Yes, but it would still be glorious! :)

At the risk of sounding totally pedantic, do you mean "giant walking war machines" mecha or...just mecha? Because technically any game with mechanical contrivances - planes, spaceships, golems, whatever - has mecha.

But to answer the question: yes, everything is better with mecha. Even things that already have mecha.

Fuck yeah.  I want a mecha so big that the cockpit is vastly beyond human proportions.  A mecha that you have to put on a smaller mecha even to pilot.

Shadowrun. It also wasn't cool when they added Furries. I still pretty much hate them for that. And I've told Steve and Adam, and well anyone who listen this.

QuoteIs there any RPG setting that specifically WOULD be much cooler if you added mecha to them?

I'm sure there is, but I couldn't tell you which or why.

Wasn't there someone out there who was running a Macross 1942 game? I certainly agree it would be complicated, but it could be cool.

Dammit if I can't find the picture of the Gundam mech sitting in the cockpit of the same Gundam mech...

I seem to remember a video game that used mecha in some sort of steam punk genre.  Maybe not realistic but it did provide interesting visuals.

Any time big walking machines are brought into any settings, realism has to be checked at the door.

The most recent computer game to use steam-driven mecha was Rise of Legends.

One that I have not played but looks is interesting is Ring of Red for the PS2, although it is set after WW2.

The only genres giant robots can't improve are low key horror and shit I don't play.

Mecha just pwns.

Give me biomechs, mech/tanks, built-in ranged weapons, melee capabilities, and anatomies not always recognizeable as hominid and you have made me very happy. Mechs of all shapes and sizes... well, maybe not all sizes. Smaller mechs are preferrable, IMO.

Mix it up with tanks, helicopters, and the occasional spacial anomaly superweapon... and... well... that just rocks.

And ornithopters. There just have to be ornithopters.

All of them. I'm allergic to anime. :)
In order to qualify as a roleplaying game, a game design must feature:

1. A traditional player/GM relationship.
2. No set story or plot.
3. No live action aspect.
4. No win conditions.

Don't like it? Too bad.

We have a steroidal cream for that.  You'll be up and watching Daimos within the week.

Speaking of mecha, you should see some of the stuff the lumber industry is using. Do a Gigablast on "lumber industry".

There;s an old saying that goes "The future ain't what it used to be."

The year 2000 came and went. No fusion power, no intelligent computers, no moonbase, no mars landing, no flying cars. *SIGH* what a letdown.....
