This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Zombies, the popularity thereof.

Quote from: Caesar SlaadI find most zombie movies lame, with a few exceptions (army of darkness, though that's just as much a skeleton movie...)

But I'll say, I've been really impressed with the coolness of zombie gaming products I have recieved. Not enough to run a whole campaign around, but enough to inspire me for an adventure or two.

Seen the AFMBE zombie miniatures? Damn, they're just like little plastic soldiers and you get a BAG of them with like 100 figs for less than what most GW blister packs cost.

Yeah, well that's what turned me off Warhammer 40k is the cost.   Yet people gobble that stuff up.  Though I think I heard their sales are down, which may be a result of gouging people too much and they are finally getting sick of it.

well, I finally dropped it, so I guess most people can.

The real pisser with me was the way they did the 4th edition rulebook. Less than 10% of it was actual rules. But you were expected to cough up 75$ for the same old background you'd bought with the other 3 editions. They did a rules booklet that had just the rules, but that wa sonly sold in the boxed set with the minis, not seperately.

I refused to pay for the new rulebook, it was a ripoff.

I dont mind paying for a new rulebook if there are enough changes to make it worthwhile.

But from what you are saying there arent enough changes to make it worthwhile so yes, it is a ripoff.

Well, the rulebook was huge but 90% or so of it was just the same old background we'd had before over and over again.

The rules were more tweaked than rewritten, meaning they were just slightly altered and not really redone.

So no, it wasn';t worth it and when uncle GW refused to make the rules available as a booklet I said "Smell ya later"....

Back on the zombie track, I think another reason for zombie popularity is that you can rig zombies into any genre or era, really.

Fantasy zomies can be magically animated. In the mnodern era they're the result of a satellite coming back from venus with some  weirdass radiation onbaord, or a genetic experiment gone wrong, or a biochem weapon getting released, or too much TV, whatever.

In SF setting they can be due to the above plus "nanoplagues" or 'alien parasites" or "weirdass virus from barsoom".

You could put zombies in traveller, D&D, or any setting inbetween, tho if you tried puttins zombies in traveller some grognards might attack you in outrage. ;)

Ok, so another popularity point with them is their umbiquituity, they can go in most genre's in one form or another.

I think they have some serious competition from:

Rackham -- Confrontation
Privateer Press -- War Machine

As well as pre-painted options now:

WOTC -- D&D Miniatures / Star Wars Miniatures
and just LOOK at this stuff from Rackham: AT-43!!!

If Rackham decides to do a vanilla fantasy game to complement AT-43 it would be Sweeeeet.

I just wish someone was doing generic SF RPG figs, or even traveller rpg figs.

Well it's good that they have competition.   That way they will actually have to compete instead of outragous gouging like they have done in the past.
