This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

As I have flipped through the players handbook, I ask myself....

Why did I bother with 3.0?   Must have been peer pressure.

1E has personality.

I've had similar problems with Amazon myself.  I knew something was up when it didn't even ship for weeks.

I definitely agree with the Edition's personality.  I especially liked how the authors talked about the reasons they implemented certain rules, such as ranged combat differences in dungeons and outdoors.  The passages give a more "behind the scenes" feel.

I also like how they handle the classes' thematics, especially the Ranger and Bard.  Being a Ranger is more than just a hunter, and high-level characters get authority along with their asskicking in the form of minions, headquarters, and titles of address.

I was staring at a "sold out" for the Player's Handbook for about two weeks before I cancelled the order and went with CoolStuff Inc, like DungeonDelver.  Just shy of a week later, a pretty, pretty box was sitting on the porch with my books.

And they are pretty fantastic.  The font is pretty close to the original, but the spacing is definitely off a bit.  Noticeable, but not off-putting.  No regrets about the purchase whatsoever.

I have all my 1E stuff still & the OSRIC books, so why would I need these reprints, anyone?   How do they improve my game?

Just curious..

You wouldn't "need" them. Maybe you would want to buy them, for nostalgic purposes. Or maybe you'd just like some new books without 20+ years of wear on them.

Or you could accept that this product just isn't "for" you and move on.

Oh, well just wondering if they had new additions or cleaned up rules or whatnot but if its exactly the same, just a copy with a pretty cover mine are well taken care of and are really quite nice so I don't really need these then.  Thanks.

It isn't so much about improving the game but making them available and freshly printed. May get some people who otherwise wouldn't try 1E to do so. But for me, it is primarily about having new and clean copies of the book. I will happily run games using weathered copies, but I have to admit it is nice when your books don't smell musty and the pages are not yellow (my eyes are not what they used to be and reading yellowed pages is actually a bit of a chore for me these days).

They're pretty cool books, but yeah, it's nothing new.
