This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Got the 1E reprints

The wife picked up the 1E reprints for me today. 2/3 of them anyways (my 1E DMG so being cheap I told her to just grab the players handbook and monster manual). Going to read the PHB tonight.

This has inspired me to rethink the campaign I am going to run for my cousin and her boyfriend (as I have mentioned they haven't played before and want me to show them how to play D&D). I will run them through each edition up to fourth, just so they can experience the changes first hand and decide for themselves which game appeals to them most.

I got my players handbook, but amazon cancelled my dm's guide and mm. grrr...

As I have flipped through the players handbook, I ask myself....

Why did I bother with 3.0?   Must have been peer pressure.

It definitely has personality. I have said for sometime that even though I prefer 2E, the 1E dmg is the best hands down...the writing and the fact that he is treating it as something new has a lot to do with it. Even after playing as long as I have, I do notice that the 1e books have this way of inspiring anticipation and excitement for the game.

Now if I can just get some reading glasses to more easily read the small sans serif font, because my eyes are definitely not what they were even a few years ago.

That's a neat idea, running them through all the editions. I think I'll swipe it. Start a group that does four mini-campaigns, each about 5 sessions long, through each successive edition.

Fortunately my distance vision is going, not my close up vision :)

I am too stubborn to get glasses.

I am a huge fan of the art and atmosphere of 1e.  It definitely seems the most gritty and "lethal", for lack of a better word than any other edition.  It's the R rated version, that's for sure, and as an adult, that's what I'd prefer rather than the kid-friendly versions since.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying future editions are mechanically inferior, just that 1e has that atmosphere of dark dungeons and horrific monsters that I prefer in D&D.  Sort of comparing Conan the Barbarian vs Harry Potter, if you will.
D&D is not an "everyone gets a ribbon" game.  If you\'re stupid, your PC will die.  If you\'re an asshole, your PC will die (probably from the other PCs).  If you\'re unlucky, your PC may die.  Point?  PC\'s die.  Get over it and roll up a new one.

O/AD&D is the one true game. All others are pale imitations of the real thing. ;) :D

I will be happy to convey your sentiments on the issue to them. Actually I have attempted to explain the various edition wars so they know what to expect if they walk into a hobby store and announce their love of edition X. They are both artists, and kind of into retro style, so my suspicion is the aesthetics of the 1e book alone might make that their favorite.

Less politically correct to be sure.

Remember when Demons and Devils were renamed to warm and fuzzy Tanarri and Baatazu?

That isn't half as funny as the explanations for chaotic neutral and neutral evil. :)

One of the dm's guides decribed 'Neutral' as something like this:

"The druids might side with the rangers that are battling gnolls, but would switch sides to help the gnolls if the rangers got the upper hand"

It was not wored exactly that way, but it was hilarious.

Neutral Insane alignment?  Neutral Stupid?

I've needed glasses for near-sightedness since I was around 11 years old though there was a period when I didn't wear them and sort of managed. But as I get older I find that I need to wear glasses to watch TV or at the cinema but then *have* to take them off for close-up reading, a typical sign of getting older.

Oh Brendan, even though I'm not into D&D, I was wondering, will you also show them some of the retro-clones?

My main goal is to expose them to D&D. If I succeed there I will probably show them a couple of retroclones. However I will probably also run them through some Savage Worlds, Vampire, Rune Quest some of my own stuff. It all depends on how much of an appetite they have for the stuff.

The funniest bit was the example of the alignments in play. Supposedly a hypothetical party consisting of one character of each alignment debated treasure allocation after an encounter.

They apparently didn't know how to deal with CN or NE in that situation so these characters were slain during the encounter. :p

Ive a complete set of 1st and 2nd edition hardbacks, however when I play its 1st edition. They should reprint unearthed arcana although that had alot of erratta, lots of missing tables.
