This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Good "shooter" sci-Fi RPG

There's certain ascetic in sci-Fi that's emerged over the past decade driven by video games that I quite enjoy.

Think of things like Halo, Mass effect, etc...

Sort of space opera/mil-sci-Fi blend. Lots of space marines, AI, alien, etc...

Protagonists are usually military and in charge.

Any good games along these lines?

I'm gonna give this two thumbs up and a hell yeah. But I do love me some Hammer's Slammers.:)

The Butcher

The old TSR Amazing Engine system had a setting (Bughunters) that was pretty much all about space marines shooting insectoid aliens dead.

In print, though, 3:16 and Deathwatch are the only ones I know of, that are actually focused on squad-level milSF roleplaying.

Of course, most SF games can be used for milSF. My old Rifts European campaign more or less begun as a NGR special ops squad fighting the encroaching monster empires.

I never had more than a passing interest in playing Traveller, until I learned this supplement existed.  Now it is an athlete's foot-like burning itch.  I loved those stories.  Playing that stuff would be incredible.

Kiero

Quote from: Ladybird;820045I know Kiero's done stuff on Mass Effect using WoD.

I've been a contributing writer, rather than the main driving force, but yes, there's Mass: the Effecting. Currently on it's third draft after 20 sessions of playtesting, with a post-GMC/nWoD2e update to come.
Currently running: Tyche\'s Favourites, a historical ACKS campaign set around Massalia in 300BC.

Mongoose Traveler is more of a game engine that game setting books are written for.

S'mon

The RPGs all seem much more low-key than the videogames - they do ALIENS style squad level stuff, you can be Hicks but not not Shephard or Master Chief. I really don't think there *are* any high-power military space opera rpgs on the market? Even traditional Star Wars type space opera is pretty thin on the ground.

Classic Traveller.

Space Marines? CHECK! As a career in the most basic rules (book 1)!
Powered Armour? CHECK! Battledress.
Shotguns in SPAAACE? CHECK! And they hit HARD!
Big plasma guns? CHECK! With Book 4: Mercenary.
Alien beasts to shoot at? CHECK! In Book 3.
Alien Bugs ala Starship Troopers? CHECK! In the "Chamax" adventure.
Aliens ala the Alien(s) film(s)? CHECK! The "Reticulan Parasite" in an early JTAS magazine!

Even "civilian" PCs tend to be ex-military with serious combat skills.

The only thing missing are vehicle rules, unless you want to use the Striker wargame rules (which are a bit complicated) and then you get ALL THE TANKS YOU WANT!

In space everyone can hear you pump your 12-gauge!
We are but a tiny candle flickering against the darkness of our times.

All of the above, except for the Chamax and the Reticulan Parasite, are in the Mongoose Traveller Core Rulebook.
