"God Level" adventures?
« on: November 19, 2021, 11:01:04 PM »
Hi all,

I am currently running a 5e game with a bunch of house rules to make it more OSR than 5e normally is.  My players, after almost 2 years of playing, are drawing towards level 20 and are currently adventuring to become a new pantheon of gods for greco-roman culture the game is set in. I would normally restart at this point, but, was going to give my PCs the option to keep playing as the OSR style game play they are really enjoying and hence love their characters.  But is there anything out there I can take and use/reuse in the OSR landscape for immortal level play - beyond the stuff in the black box which I have.  The adventures for the black box, unless I am missing some, all seemed pretty tongue in cheek.

Thanks in advance.

Odyssey of the Dragonlords endgame section covers this including divine ascension rules, but not really worth buying the whole thing just for the endgame.

The final couple books of Pathfinder APs work well converted to 5e as near-god-level content.  I ran the last two books of Rise of the Runelords at level 20 and that worked well, likewise the last two books of Shattered Star. I think the last two books of Return of the Runelords also work as a sequel to these.

I think the OSR as it developed is in general highly averse to god-level play. Early OSRIC adventures were mostly high level, basing themselves on Gygax's early tournament modules, but then the OSR went over to a more megadungeon-centric and Fantasy Fucking Vietnam style play mode. So there's not a lot out there for BECMI Masters & Immortals level play.

Exemplars & Eidolons is good https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/144651/Exemplars--Eidolons. Dark Dungeons replicates BECM+WoTI - https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/177410/Dark-Dungeons

Aside from the Paizo AP Book 5 & 6, when I've run level 20+ stuff I tend to just use the monster books & make up my own scenarios. Kobold Press books are overall a lot more useful than WoTC, their monsters are a lot tougher, though Mordenkainen's does have some decent stuff in it for this play mode.

Edit: My old friend Craig used to publish 3e & 4e Immortals-level stuff: https://eternitypublishing.wordpress.com/ - BiTD I ran 1e with him up into deity level, his PC Thrin has Final Form stats published at https://immortalshandbook.com/shrine.htm  ;D

Solomani,

Check out some of the modules for the D&D , Masters, Companion, and Immortal editions (BECMI).  These were designed for ultra high level characters.  Of course you will have to adapt them to 5e.

CM1: Test of the Warlords has the party fighting an army of 400 Frost Giants in one encounter. Sounds like a good romp for some superheroic characters!

The H-series, set in the Bloodstone lands ends with the characters fighting Orcus.  The last module H4 The Throne Of Bloodstone is for character levels 20-100.

Q1: Queen of the Demonweb Pits, was TSR’s first foray into godslaying.  It took the party to the abyss to fight Lolth, who was pretty weak by “god” standards (66 hit points).  It nerfed most of the player’s spells and magic items.

Pathfinder published the stats for most of the Great Old Ones from the Cthulhu Mythos in Bestiaries 2-onwards...  You can convert them to 5e and drive your players insane.

You could check out adventures for Amber Diceless system.  In Amber, the player characters were godlike beings.  Challenges were abstract since most things a godlike player character would attempt, they would be successful at. So you have to trick them into screwing themselves.

If you really want to mess with your players, use Sandy Petersen's Cthulu Mythos for 5e!

Thanks team.  I am actually running a Dragonlords campaign, but, its so off the rails at this point it's only loosely related to the original.  However, the "becoming gods" part is in play at the moment.  I just used OSR adventures converted to 5e, instead of the pretty mundane ones included (Skyfortress instead of a minotaur fort, Hall of the Blood King instead of a vampire crypt as written and will probably leave the Atlantis part mostly untouched).

Actually, that reminds me of another question - any underwater OSR adventures people can recommend?

Ghosts Of Saltmarsh has a couple of short underwater encounter areas, in olving a sunken ship, a reef, and a sumbmerged town that was controlled by a kraken.  This was in addition to the campaign matereal so it could be inserted into any game.

If you wanted to design your own underwater adventures with random charts and the like, Ghosts of Saltmarsh has those as well.

Also in ‘Ghosts, is The Final Enemy, a 5e rewrite of U3: The Final Enemy, where the PC’s take on a Sahuagin fortress, most of which is underwater.

If you wanted many more options than what ‘Ghosts offers then check out Frog God Games’ Tome Of Adventure Design.  It has charts for everything, including underwater.

Godbound felt the most 'Your a Demigod'-like.

This sounds like its worth reading, thanks.

Oh yes, forgot about this.  Need to read it.  Does it have any supporting adventures by chance?

A few yes. But its OSR-ish but I find its best elements are system neutral.
