This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Elliot - I have no such motive, and I'll thank you not to impute it to me. Politeness suggests asking rather than armchair psychoanalysis where such things are concerned, in any case.

Ian - nice try. (Not that you're wrong, of course.)

Well then you'd do a lot better just saying what it is you're trying to say instead of using irony and imputing motives and attitudes onto others. You're deliberately comparing the RQ phenomenon to the modern "swine" charge, let alone some other completely off-the-wall and frankly offensive analogies.

I not trying to getthoize any criticism of the so called Swine. Just trying to keep trash where it belongs.

Ah.  "I'm rubber, you're glue."  Or is this more, "I know you are, but what am I?"  Are you still smarting over that vampire-thing in that other thread? Whatever, dude.

You know, your posts where you describe what you're doing with gaming now are consistently cool to read.  Like that 1st edition Stormbringer bit -- priceless.  But when you start trying to play on your grognard cred and your old-timer-in-his-rocking-chair routine...well, not so much.

Well, I for one categorically reject Calithena's claims. We RQ players didn't think we were better than the spotties playing D&D. Sure, we knew that the mechanics were much smoother and more intuitive to use than that clunker AD&D, and that Greg Stafford's drugged-out wackiness was much more sophisticated than Gary Gygax's stodgy conservatism, but it's not like we thought that made us better. Better-informed, perhaps, or possessing better judgement.

High five for that one, Droog.

Elliot, do you have a dog in this race or something?

I'm glad you enjoy my gaming posts, Ian.

Quote from: RPGPunditBut fundamentally, we've also lost something.  We've lost the ability to appeal to people who aren't going to be hardcore gamers.   You can't, with any game out there right now (including D&D) get a group of people together, whip up characters in 5 minutes, and just go Forward to Adventure (pardon the shameless plug).
Maybe you can't, but I can.

Long prep is for long campaigns with experienced gamers, or at least a majority of experienced ones in the group.

It's nothing to do with the game system or the attitude of the person who wrote it. It's about the intelligence, enthusiasm, and balls of the person offering the game. If you are stupid, diffident, shy or lazy when you offer people something, then they'll not be keen on it, doesn't matter if it involves dice or not.

Gamers are an insular bunch. Notice how whenever someone posts whining about not being able to get a game group, they talk about the difficulty of recruiting gamers - it doesn't even occur to them to recruit non-gamers and make them into gamers. These are the same sorts of people who'll complain they don't have a date - but never ask anyone out.

This has nothing to do with the games themselves. Gamers are just insular, and are often shy and lazy. That's why they can't get a game happening in five minutes with some non-gamers.
Quote from: CalithenaAll you Runequest fans deserve the exact same treatment as those guys who lorded it over us at the hobby store and in the fanzines, at least until you PUBLICLY DENOUNCE THEM and DISSASSOCIATE YOURSELF FROM THEM IN PUBLIC.
I am superior to you not because of my gaming, but because you are foolish enough to believe in a Swine War, and have come up with one of the most absurd posts ever about it - the idea that the RQ guys thought they were superior because they used percentiles and skills instead of classes and levels. What a load of old bollocks.

I publicly denounce and disassociate myself from all believers in the Swine War!

No way.  I totally knew I was better than the jerks playing D&D.

And then, one day, I miraculously wasn't 14 any more.  I grew up and realized that just because I don't like a game, doesn't mean the people who enjoy it are idiots.  It just means that I want something different out of a game than other people do.  Me, I don't like D&D/d20.  If you do, that's awesome, and I'm happy you enjoy it.  All I ask in return is the simple respect from you (this is a 'general you' not pointed at anyone specifically) to accept that I'm not putting your game down; I'm just saying I don't enjoy it.

If people in this hobby would simply accept that everyone has different tastes and needs out of gaming, maybe we'd all be able to enjoy it more.

See, this is why you and I can never play in the same game.

Er, no, wait ...  ;)
