This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: DrewI've a suspicion that the UK convention made money hand over fist. At least it ought to have. When I compared the ticket prices to what was actually on offer it was hard not to feel completely ripped off.
Yeah, but I wouldn't expect them to pump up the budget for the operation this year. :(
Quote from: StuartIf that's the case, it's not a loan they should have taken out without asking for.
Oh definately. How intentional was it? *shrug* Probably only Atkinson himself and a few other GenCon employees could answer that.
QuoteLucas isn't pissed because he didn't get money for himself.  The money was supposed to go to a charity for sick children.  It wasn't Gen Con's money to spend.
I realize, that's why I used the phrase "money to go now". It could have been incompetence coupled with a convergance of unexpected events. Didn't get around to moving the money forward in time, had unexpected credit problems, etc. :( In retrospect the money probably should have never gone into GenCon's accounts but it was probably easier logistically  to handle collecting payment from the bidders that way.

P.S. It is a sad fact that charities get screwed with pledges all the time. I'm not saying that's what happened here but it does happen. My accountant has the story of a local businessman (well he's not local now, he's moved to Arizona) that bid $10,000 in an auction for a simple stuffed bear in support of Alberta Children's Hospital. Big splash in the news, oh what a great and generous guy! When months passed and cheque hadn't shown up and he kept getting brushed off by phone the accountant showed up at the office.  He was told point blank that it would be crazy to pay $10,000 for a stuffed bear and that if the accountant went to the media about it he'd be sued. Now THAT is a slimeball jerk.

The overseas Gen Cons have little to do with Gen Con in the states. They are run by separate companies who license the brand from Gen Con. So if you want change there, lobby for it at home.
I certainly wouldn't call Luke a vanity publisher, he's obviously worked very hard to promote BW, as have a handful of other guys from the Forge. -- The RPG Pundit

Koltar

The charity thing look like it was just at the West Coast version of Gen Co - which I'm a little relieved about.

At the Indy, those of us at the Charity jail usually hand the money DIRECTLY to a representative of that year's charity - and they hand us a receipt. (Somewhere around here,  I even have pictures of myself or other "klingons" handing the donations directly to charity reps.)

I can think of only 2 times in the recent 5 or 6  years where we handed what we made to a GenCon rep or staffer.

You know, Koltar, given the fact Peter Atkison tricked you out of a million bucks, you are one tranquil Klingon.

I had no idea that was the case. It explains a lot.

Looks like I need to find out who's really responsible. I'll follow the money trail, interrogate Cuban insurgents and try to find out exactly who this 'Clay Bertrand' character really is.

We're through the looking glass, people!

Different charity....different arrangements.

Again - the lawsuit involves GenCoin West /Ca.....my group only goes to Gen Con Indy.
Seperate situations.

(Or were you trying to make a joke? I don't joke when charities are involved.)

Horseman Events I beleive. Check out UKRoleplayers - there's often quite a lot of discussion about Gencon & other UK cons on there.

(Notable absense is Salute2008 in Docklands - which this year is being held on the weekend all local trains are shut down for maintenance. Way to go guys... )

Wrong charity. It was nerds in wookie outfits that got cheated, not nerds in Klingon outfits.
