This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

One way to avoid this pronoun nonsense is just call every at Gen Con a twat.

Or pretend to be an Aussie and call everybody a cunt.

I'm definitely in the "Ask me my pronouns" camp. Because then I'm alerted to anyone intending to talk about me behind my back!

My answer would still be "Why would I care what pronoun you use when I'm not even there? Use whatever works best to communicate with the person you're talking to."

Now if the Con asks me to display my 2nd person pronouns which -- unless your intention is to be rude and then who cares anyway? -- is the grammatical tense one should use in the presence of the person being talked about, I have no problem with that.

I'll go with "Thou/Thee/Thine".
Old School? Back in my day we just called it "School."

Blazing Saddles had it right - "Badges, we don't need no sticking badges."
Sorry. A query. That line is in Blazing Saddles? Wow. In interesting mode, then, to the line in Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Pay a lot of money to get a crack at a glorified merch dealer's room, wear your mask at all times, adhere to weird neo-linguistics to prove you are not the worst person ever, and maybe get attacked by a lunatic at a bar or your hotel, all so you can see unstable people show you their pre-kickstarter card or board game or get a copy of a zine that might be collectable.

Filk? What's that? Smof? No thank you, I quit.

What a charming proposition.

I'll pass.

The blazing saddles phrase is a parody reference to The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, both great films.

If it's the only way the badges come then fuck that, if it's just an option that is there for those that want it then whatever.

Though if forced my pronouns are Blow/Me.

I still scratch my head at all this pronouns lark.

Not that I'd ever go to Gen(ital) Con. But I'd never comply with any of this nonsense. If other people want to engage with it, then fine. But I will not  engage in such folly that only affects 0.01 of the worlds population.

I just don't care, who or what you look like and I expect the same ambivalence in return.

Thread closed for comment over on EN World because "obviously" ::) https://www.enworld.org/threads/gen-con-announces-badges-can-include-pronouns.685455/

Options on the badges are:

(blank)
Ask me my pronouns
He/Him
She/Her
They/Them
He/She/They

[...]

GenCon is ruined!  >:(

Oh wait, (blank) -- meaning non-participation -- is an available option. Whew!

GenCon is saved!  8)

Actually, I've never gone.  :) Always thought it'd be fun, but after working at game conventions in my youth I no longer feel a strong desire. Seems pretty costly, then you get sick after spreading everyone's long distance cooties, and next that latter day funk... Throw eggshells upon the floor to walk on (people are more stressed and uptight now) and I am gonna pass. I just wanted to see the vendors room and maybe the auction room.

I'd personally stick to a cheaper local convention if I really cared. Must be nice for people who business travel a lot, or to keep in touch with long distance friends.  :D

My "cheaper local convention" just sent me an email advertising a new grant program for marginalized game designers.

https://www.bigbadcon.com/blog/our-new-story-synth-microgrant-program/

Basically, submit an application and create a game in 6 months and you'll be awarded $300 dollars and micro-transactions whenever anyone accesses your game online.

But, of course, I can't apply unless I pretend to be a faggot or something. The application is only open to: "Marginalized Gender, Disabled, BIMPOC (???), LGBTQUIA+, and Identity [Other].

Oh, and get this, you can check multiple boxes, and website says the program is focused on helping game designers at the intersection of these identities. So if I were a morbidly obese black lesbian they would drool all over my application.

As a straight white, able-bodied male who works construction... odds are not so good.

I don't think I shall be attending this year BigBadCon, you furry-loving pricks.

Will they allow "It", to be placed upon the badges?  Neither he, nor she; but It.

So the super scared of the worst pandemic ever crowd is going to have a mass gathering and see if they can spawn yet another variant of Captain Tripps?   I guess at least they do not want to offend anyone as they hold a mass super spreader event.

My formerly local con stopped using Gamemaster and went to host instead. Never went again. I think this was a decade ago.

I find I like the idea of a con more than the actual experience usually, anyway.
