Required to play? No. But I've read that there will be random card packs to expand upon the game. Is that information incorrect? Like War at Sea, a game that I thought was fun, I dislike random expansion to any game line. I think it blows. So I don't support it anymore. No biggie.

Yes, it's correct: there will be some packs of cards to add to the cards already included with the game, but these are completely optional. You may choose to not use the cards included with the boxed set to begin with, and choose not to purchase any of the booster packs for your game, whether you end up using the cards in the boxed set or not. So it's like optional on top of optional, if you will.

Its NOT that type of "random".

Both our Distributor and WotC went out of their way to say that the cards were in no way a 'collectible' card game subset or anything like that.
There are no 'rares' or 'commons'. The only reeason that they are random appears to be so there is an element of surprise when making a character.

Instead of rolling dice vs. a dice chart of character stuff you open up up a booster pack of cards.

So, still random - just not using dice.

Although there does appear to be a dice chart in the rulebook for some of those same character features.

GAMMA WORLD

In the BOX, In Order –

1.   A one sheet double-sided Flyer for the regular D&D game line. Same thing that WotC sent out to many game store a few months ago.

2.   The GAMMA WORLD Roleplaying Game Rulebook. It's the same size as the just-released D&D Essentials books. Got a green Garish cover that matches Artwork on the cover of the box.

The above two items sit in a 'tray"-like shape formed by a folded cardboard insert  - much like that cardboard wedge that was in the new Red box D&D.
There is a grid on that cardboard tray that might be used in game play. I measured it with a ruler, it is 1 inch squares on the diagonal.

3.   Next is a shrink-wrapped set of cards. Underneath the deck of cards is a printed a small list of Game Components that are underneath the TRAY. These are supposed to be:
·   2 card stock sheets of character and monster tokens.
·   4 Character Sheets.
·   Bonus booster Pack

I am now lifting the cardboard tray away and putting it aside. Discover now all these items are shrink-wrapped together.

4.   The MAP Sheets. These are mostly nice, just wish they were thicker or made by PAIZO.

5.   CHARACTER AND MONSTER TOKENS. They look alright. I know WotC put similar token cardstock sheets in the REDBOX D&D and the DUNGEONMASTER'S KIT box. I would have preferred pre-painted miniatures. IF I ran a campaign of GAMMA WORLD, I'd use non-Iconic STAR WARS miniatures mixed with some Chronoscope figures from REAPER miniatures. Tokens just make me think "board game" too much instead of Role playing game.

6.   CHARACTER SHEETS. They are too Small!! Wizards of the Coast made them the same size as the rulebook. I would have liked a standard size of 8 ½ by 11 for the character sheets. It's easy to imagine some gamers or newbies squinting when using these sheets. Also, the sheets are printed double sided, but it's the same things printed on both sides – which seems like a waste of printing or paper to me. At least with the permission to photocopy on there its possible to enlarge one and make a standard size master copy version for use with future players.

7.   The Bonus Card Pack: Now opening it. In the booster packs you get 8 cards.
Here are the ones I got:
1. OMEGA   Ishtar Hoverboard
2. ALPHA    BIO SENSITIVE NOSE
3. ALPHA    PSI OBJECT READING
4. OMEGA    Ishtar Disruptor Pike
5. OMEGA AREA 52 Meltdown Orbiter
6. OMEGA AREA 52 Gunsight Orbiter
7. ALPHA   PSI Weapon Multiattack
8. OMEGA   AREA 52 INVISO ARMOR

Got a bit of a disappointment with the cards. They are just stat blocks with card backs – no illustrations. When these cards were first mentioned back in June or July, I was hoping for some nice artwork on the cards illustrating the equipment.

What bitches!  I was expecting at least some pics.

How durable do the cards feel?   Like M:tG?  Or do they need to be in card sleeves ASAP?

How many Map sheets?  How big?  Double sided?

How are the illos on the tokens?   Too bad no pre-paints.   Necromunda & 40k figs will be great though.   I gotta check my Mutant Chronicle figs and see if they fit nicely in a 1 inch square.

Me too. The aqrtwork inside the Rulebook might be nicknamed "Erol Otus Lite" or Otus cleaned up/sanitized. It looks ;like whoever used to do the D20 Modern and D20 Future book artwork - that kind of look and style.

QuoteHow durable do the cards feel?   Like M:tG?  Or do they need to be in card sleeves ASAP?
They seem sturdy enough - mayber slightly thinner than M:TG cards. IF I ran a campaign (and thats one really big IF) I'd suggest my players each use one 9 pocket card collector page for their cards. Thing is - tjhats what I hated abnout playing in that 4th edition D&D game. I enjoy or like more just having a character sheet, a notebook, my dice and pen/pencil when I'm a player.

QuoteHow many Map sheets?  How big?  Double sided?
There are TWO map sheets.
The map sheets are double sided. They fold out to about 4 times the size pof the box. I wasn't kidding about the min-map grid on the cardboard tray - conceivably you could dpo a duel or small skirmish on it.

QuoteHow are the illos on the tokens?
The illustrations on the token are very "four color", garish, and pulpish and are mostly re-used artwork from the rulebook and promotional materials.
The dpominmant colors on everything seems to be green and purple with un healthy doses of orangfe and puke-shade biege.

Yeah...I would've loved some pre-painted plastic minis. I could see mixing together some old HORROR Clix figs and less familiar figs from their STAR WARS and D&D miniature lines for use with GAMMA WORLD.
