This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Ok, so if Jong says he doesn't have a problem, I guess the problem is with my own computer. I don't see why it would have such a problem though; I'm using the highest-speed internet you can get in this godforsaken country, and my computer has 2GB of RAM, which I would think would be enough...

Yes, I do use video, but the video quality is fine. My Skype conversations just end unexpectedly, very often.

You might to check and see if you have the latest version of Skype installed.  A person in our group was having problems with Skype, but it was only him.  Finally, we discovered that he had an older version.  He installed the new version and the problems went away.

I should note that my Skype conversations have been mostly one-on-ones, rather than with several participants.

This was exactly my experience for two months trying to game via Skype.  As mentioned earlier, we switched to SightSpeed.  Today our connection was flawless.

We ran a D&D game on Skype for a couple of months on a weekly basis and although we had some individual dropouts (due to local internet connections) it seemed to work well enough. We used Maptools as well for dice rolling and the battle map. It all seemed to go smoothly enough although I'd rather have been doing it face to face.

RPGPundit,
I have had some atrocious experiences though. We had a 6 player group with 2 in the UK and the rest spread out all over the US. And the host was in the UK. We dropped so bad, we had to switch to Ventrillo.

What we have been able to piece together from our various experiences is:
1) Some ISP (Cable Modems in particular) have different upload and download speeds. Make sure that both speeds are sufficient
2) Whoever the host is needs to have lightning fast connections and spare CPU cycles and Memory. For our group of five, that narrows it down to just 2 of us.

I hope that helps you have a better game on line man.
