This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Games as Written vs. Games as Played

Quote from: All ChemicalI have read this before and I guess I am alone in playing the game as written. I don't know what that qualifies me for in the ever growing list of gamer labels. My take is that I spent money on a product. I am assuming this is a quality product developed by creative, talented people. The rules have been playtested and modified before the release.

This is why reviews and "trusted" word of mouth is very important to me. If I read a system is clunky, lacking vital info, setting doesn't fit my taste, or is corrected in supplements, they lose me. I am not spending money to test my amateur developing skills to make it work.

Now - houserules which slightly modify a rule or two to satisfy my group's particular needs is alright. Going off the gonzo end of the pool on the setting after we have thoroughly exhausted the "as is" game is alright.
Yes, but if the tinkerers in the world did not tinker we wouldn't have such goodies as a Roomba with mounted airsoft gun, Nintendo Wii that opens doors, Xboxes that run Linux and nearly every early D&D clone. Sure the rules in the book I buy should be complete, and solid, and all that fun stuff - but what happens after I take them to the table is pretty much up in the air.

And on topic, I don't run Exalted 2e by the book. I don't have the stomach for it and my players don't have the patience. We make a fair approximation of the combat rules which is very similar to what I did with AD&D when I played it, but we're more concerned in things going smoothly and being interested than following every step.

The most glaring error I've made was with my first copy of Basic D&D. Somehow I missed the definition of a turn as being an abstract measure of time, and thought I had to make every 60' travelled by the party into a ten minute descriptive monologue. The term "Dungeon Crawl" has never been so apposite.

This sort of stuff is the reason why I say that playtest reviews confuse as much as they clarify, in comparison to straight read-only reviews.

Yes and no...I mean, I've seen read-only reviews that badly misinterpret or otherwise miss important mechanics that their use might become obvious  in play. My favorites were always the Silhouette reviews that claim the reviewer could not figure out how attributes work for skill rolls when it has always been (since HG 1e) very explicitly stated.
