This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Author Topic: [5 Torches Deep] would you watch a actual play of 5 Torches Deep on YouTube?  (Read 1053 times)

On Fridays I have been playing a old school style RPG called 5 Torches Deep.

Rough edit of something I've been working on. Thinking of maybe producing actual play videos of our Friday sessions.

https://youtu.be/WBl8GEVQdc8p

Would this interest anyone?
After watching this would you watch any future ones?
Would you be more likely to watch if it stays one long video or broken down to smaller 45 minutes/1 hour long?

Please forgive the sound levels and the watermark, this is just trying some stuff out and would work on editting things properly if we went forward with the project.

Going by feedback from the places I have posted this, I wasn't really expecting there to be a large audience but my postings have revealed there is some interest and I liked making it so think I will continue.

I have created a second episode, this one a lot shorter, decided to break each session down into multiple videos.

No watermark on this one. 🙂

Good luck. Personally, I can't handle watching RPG play, but I know its a thing online.  I'd tell your players to dress in costume and up their acting game, and you'd need to upgrade graphics and sound if you guys are envisioning growing this project for a larger audience.

Here's the funny thing - I always think when I see a new system "Hey! That looks interesting! I'd like to see how that plays!" - then I'll see a liveplay of it and my eyes glaze over watching the GM do things that I think are just bad GMing, and players clearly playing for performative reasons rather than just playing the game for the game's sake. I'll be frank and I think a lot of the "bad GMing" is part of the performative issue too, if I'm being generous.

What I want in a video about how a system plays is something like Runeslinger when he sold me on FFG's Star Wars. Which was a HUUUUUUGE difficulty for me because I was intensely skeptical - if not outright hostile to the funky dice, and the fact that I love WEGD6 (how dare they ever make another Star Wars licensed game!!!).

Simple presentation, examples of the die-mechanics, and sub-systems. I like a little commentary - pro's/cons etc.

I don't like seeing a bunch of players that effectively know very little about the game doing silly shit, with a GM play-acting for the camera more than his players. Yeah I'm being slightly charitable, but fuck it - its true. The livestreaming of gameplay is serving other needs besides the game itself.

I can tolerate it if it's intended as a demo of the game. But nothing else.

Edit: I should comment on your video: I didn't mind it at all. It seems just like a regular game played online you happened to record. Fair play. It helps that I'm interested in Torches, and you and your crew seem to be genuine.

I love RPG system game mechanic breakdowns with lots of test scenarios and visuals.
Live-session gameplays can be fun to watch sometimes but I find I am just spending a lot of time waiting for some situation to occur to see a game mechanic in action.

Thank you for your comments, it is very much a recording of us playing rather than concerted effort to create an actual play.

I created it as I like the idea of having a record and thought it might interest some people

Just uploaded Episode 3, the party does some more exploration of the lair under the giant Oak tree.

Can they keep their heads  and their lunch down 😉

Thanks for the comment, in my opinion some setups are design specifically for recording and more for entertaining than showing the game and everybody is going our of their way to play up for the recording and it seems to revolve around personalities rather than the game. Where as I prefer the more natural actual plays that just follow a gaming group as they seem to be more about the game and how it plays. Which is the feel I have gone for here, we are just playing the game and happen to be recording.

I'm interested and will have to take a look when I get some time.

I tried running a 5TD game for a few friends and we bailed after 2 sessions.  The mage player hated the magic mishaps in play and the foraging/resupply rules seemed to be off somehow.  I'm interested in seeing if it was something we messed up or if it was just not for us.

I did like the random dungeon creation rules though.  I downloaded a puzzle cube app for my phone and used that to design the one for the session.

We have mixed thoughts on the magic mishaps, I think they make for interesting consequences  to failing to cast magic. One of our players hates magic users in the game ever since a mishap from my cleric melted all his armour and weapons lol.

Magic seems to make everyone clear the area first  :D

Supply is a difficult one to get your head round at first but I think we've got the hang of it in our games there is some discussion on it at points.

I would recommend visiting the reddit r/5torchesdeep for rule queries they are quite helpful in there

...

Even though it's a great game, I'm guessing this group would not be big fans of Dungeon Crawl Classics. heh
I think I'll have to watch just to see the player with the Cleric react to this one.

Had some feedback that some people would be intersted in just an audio version. Here is a link to the audio only version, pauses where stuff would be happening onscreen removed and audio levelled out for easier listening
