I was bagging old Conan comic (savage sword) yesterday and on the back was an ad for Hyperion war (probably misspelled that).  I was a play by mail war game.  Up to 30 players all mailed their turns in every month and got the simultaneous results back.  I remember the guys a the comic shop playing something like that but on a computer in the early 90s.  Is anyone doing a play by post either Roleplaying or war game?  I've searched online before but anything I found either seemed lame, opaque, or a discarded desicated husk of a beast long dead.  

Seems like there should be something like that, and you guys seem like the folks who know where it is.

There is a game called Solium Infernum that just begs to be role - played as you play, and it can be (sadly) only played by e - mail.

Ok. So no one really knows about anything like this still happening?  I find that odd.  It seams like a perfect format for an app.  Did the whole genera get colonized by Korean pay to win gambling games?

I played RSI's Duelmasters and Hyborian War 30 some years ago. Also a few from other companies. PBM was a good way to game when you live in the middle of nowhere in Wyoming.

If you have an extensive collection of back-issues of Dragon magazine from the 70s and 80s there's a lot of ads for PBM games to be found.

In fact, looking through the old ads in Dragon is one of my favorite reading pastimes.

Really?  I've run into the occasional FBI product, but didn't know that was where they'd gotten their start.

To the OP, I'm not aware of anything of quite the same sort still going on, but PBEM/PBP/PBF (Play-By-EMail/Post/Forum) RPGs are pretty widespread, so I'm sure there are groups doing more military/imperal-focused cames in similar format.

I played several PBM games back in the 80's and 90's. Starmaster, Starlord, Monster Island, Takamo, Blood Pit, Venom, State of War, Middle Earth PBM, Out Time Days, etc. I even worked for Emprise Game Systems which ran Blood Pit and others. They were fun for a while despite some having crappy GMs. The Internet briefly improved them then killed them as there was suddenly no need. I kinda miss them though. There are a couple I would like to see running again with a full compliment of like hearted players. It will never be though.

Out Time Days featured a really weird planet with lots of mysterious stuff going on. Some day I would like to meet that GM and fully learn what was really going on and what his plans were.

Blood Pit is still running as a once-a-week game on the Internet, I think. Monster Island is still going I think. A few others maybe.

I checked out some of those.  I didn't quite understand what was going on but I was pretty sure I didn't want to play an Orc barbarian to someone's Elvan princess so I left.

I remember seeing lots of these kinds of ads over the years, I was occasionally tempted to sign up but never did.

Do you guys remember the ads for an RPG phone line? I think the ads were in comics, in the 80s, if I remember correctly (or it might have been in Dragon magazines).
