This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I really feel sorry for all of you who actually bought this. Has the game gotten any favourable reviews?

I recall GameGeeks being pretty positive about it:

This always seemed like a game aimed at people who like to make characters for hours on end and talk about D&D on forums without actually ever having to play D&D.

This is how reviews should be written.

I don't care much if a reviewer hates (or loves) the game, what I do care about, is why. And this thread gives lots of examples of how things work in Fantasycraft, so I can make an informed decision myself if this game is for me.

Congratulations, BT, this is a great thread.

Quote from: One Horse Town;509351In fact, in theory, i liked how they handled a lot of things. Taken in isolation any one of them could have been a decent addition to an OGL game, but taken as a whole it's pretty overwhelming IMO.
This is exactly what I feel about Burning Wheel. Taken in isolation I like a lot of its subsystems and the ideas behind them. Taken as a whole, I can't help thinking "What the fuck  . This is unplayable".

The Good News: FantasyCraft has innovative, at times, brilliant mechanics to add to d20.

The Bad News: There are 12 per page.

The Ugly News: A huge chunk are metagame and/or new school/narrative inspired.

As someone who has occasionally thought "FantasyCraft, I should check that out sometime" I am pretty well convinced by this review. Also I need aspirin now.

The spellcasting thing isn't handwaved at all. You know a number of spells at any given time equal to your spellcasting skill ranks + your wisdom score + any bonus spells granted by class features or feats. You divide them up however you want amongst the 10 circles(0 - 9), though you're stuck with what you choose. No switching them out later, so if you plan on playing to higher levels you should grab some higher circle spells now, though you'll have a good 15+ spellcasting points and possibly some Wis increases and maybe a feat or two to spend on new spells later.

Yes, this means that if you're only playing a one-shot or short campaign that you can load up on lower circle spells. But Fantasy Craft is incredibly hard to break using the rules as written, so this won't make you overpowered or anything.

AD&D Trivia - Assuming Caesar Slaad is a Red Slaad, like his avatar, what spell/spells will allow you to summon him?

Cacodemon?

Rincewind1

In 3e, that'd be Lesser Planar Binding, or Planar Binding.

Are Slaads demons in AD&D? I didn't yet check in OSRIC that.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

I think they're considered as demon types, yes.

I didn't think the game was all that bad, based on starting to read and then (increasingly) skimming. But it was more complexity than I'd like for what it promises, which is, after all, a version of D&D.

I especially see nothing wrong with toolboxes, and the flexible character interpretations based on class were kind of interesting.

However, I don't have time for this. My copy's for sale.
