This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Please define your "meaning" and how it changes when there is an inhabited R´lyeh.

Ah come on, we had reached an agreement. Don't spoil the golden moment.

No, I´m giving you the benefit of doubt, and I´m suppressing all the bad things that are starting to brew up in my brain to attribute sense to what you and mythusmage said.

If you don´t want me to think rather lowly of you, please define.
If you don´t care about my opinion, I´ll shut up and do my own thinking about how this fits together.

ARRRRG. Well you've gone and spoiled the moment anyway. So here it goes.

meaning: to have the value of; assume the importance of

Right now as you sit and read this sentence I just typed you think you have meaning. But you have none. No meaning from outside and no meaning from inside. No meaning anywhere. Zippo. Nahda. No...meaning.

None.

Settembrini

To whom?
You are implying there´s a big, objective, source of meaning.
Meaning is subjective, don´t you know?

EDIT: Even if you were right, what would Elder Gods change? Actually, they´d provide MORE meaning.

Everyone. Nobody. It doesn't matter.

Being a subjective judgement is based on a lack of knowledge. Once you have knowledge of the whole Truth you realize you have no meaning. None. Not even to yourself.

Quote from: SpikeMy understanding is when scholars of Greek Mythology use the term Cthonic to describe a deity, it is often due to assosiations with the earth and darkness, and that the root term of Cthonic has something to do with 'underground' in meaning.

Not that I'm any expert. But if I am not entirely crack smoking, by definition Aton, as the Sun, could not be properly Cthonic, even if he was a more primative 'SUN' rather than 'Aton the guy who keeps the sun up there'...

So, in the Greek, Hades is Cthonic, Zeus is not.  OF course, this doesn't preclude Hades and some of the Titans that came before Zeus from actually being older names for more encompassing aspects of reality, the survivors of some ancient tribal holy war becoming more anthropomorphized and only being Cthonic in origin rather than portrayal...

Well, you're quite right as far as the Greeks are concerned.
However, I was using the term in its context in Religious Studies, which borrows it from Jungian psychology, where the term has been expanded to mean ancient and primitive non-personalized nature-worship in general, and not just cults of the earth.

Quote from: SettembriniWhat would that truth be?
The big one. That you have no meaning.

The truth is incomprehensible too. The fact that a human can understand a concept like irrellevence says t is not the truth of a cthonic mystery.

You go crazy, mutate and gain magical powers and you will never understand why.

Call of Cthulhu is a tragic game, and I think that's what makes it not as popular as other titles.

I have never seen the horror in CoC either.  It's a relic of another culture, one depressive's paean to his own insignificance.  HPL had much less to say about anything than R. E. Howard did and the two of them, were they alive today, would be nothing more than mildly popular fanfiction.net authors.

CoC is a pretty sweet monster game full of nutty cults and giant fucking octopi.  Looking for meaning in there is on the level of shitting in your hand, smearing it on your cock and shouting "O PAIN!"

Toss cults at your players, throw in the Royal Pant and his sex-o-phone panther-siren demon servants.  Get Nodens in there with some baby oil for a demigod orgy if you like.  You're not going to get a mood of cosmic horror going; deal with it.

Quote from: blakkie, from the first frigging post in this frigging long dead and dreaming threadIn the later I came across a suggestion that Lovecraft himself did not consider himself writing horror but instead "dark fantasy". I'm digging that, because I never got the flat out fear of them. Just the sadness.
Never thought I'd see the day when RPGPundit was the shining light left in a corpse of a thread. But I was wrong. :o  There it is!

No ill meant KrakaJak, but I think we're just on endless loop howling in the wind. And I'm outa here.
