This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If anyone is interested in seeing a highly entertaining game (in my opinion) here is the playlist for "Dusk" by Matt Colville. He is using D&D 4th edition rules, but he admits (in a video about using dreams and portents in your game) that he tried this years ago using 1st edition rules (the first game didn't go well because he failed to properly inform the players of some vital information).

Any description of what this is about?

cavalier973

It is an adventure Colville made; a party of non-human PCs are tasked with escorting a group of humans through a wood that is slowly becoming dangerously magical. It is more interesting than it sounds. The game begins in an inn, where there is a party game that turns into a brawl.

If you have listened to the Acquisitions, Inc. podcasts then you know how those games are basically a platform for the players to tell jokes. This game isn't like that; there are jokes, of course, but the players are playing in a more straightforward and serious manner, while still being entertaining.

Hard pass. Colville is an ultra woke human-shaped bag of dogshit.
Klytus, I'm bored. What plaything can you offer me today?

An obscure body in the S-K System, Your Majesty. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet... "Earth".

I understand why you feel that way, but I feel he's a decent person, and he gives good advice. I enjoy his writing and videos.

Interesting. It doesn't really bleed through to his videos—although, I doubt I have watched all of them. His "History of D&D, One Fighter at a Time" series is quite good.

Anyway, I am getting some ideas about how to be a better DM just by watching this "Dusk" game.

Uh, what? Are you mistaking him for the Critical Role people? Did you think he was referencing Matt Mercer and not Matt Colville? Cause that does not describe Matt Colville at all. Matt's a pretty "ordinary dude" who came up through AD&D 1e and has a lot of old school sensibilities. He's not political in general.

That depends on what videos you watch.  His game advice stuff doesn't get into political stuff.  I'd say it's about 50/50 if you'll hear him say "oh yea, I'm a socialist" on any given Q&A livestream.  I know I've heard that more than once from him.  It wouldn't surprise me if there's other stuff, but that's the one that I remember hearing more than once.

So his personal beliefs, which he doesn't put into any of his RPG stuff, make him an "ultra woke human-shaped bag of dogshit?"

BTW, socialism is not in any way linked to woke politics. In fact they often clash. Socialism is about class ideas. Wokism is about ideas of personal identify. Woke people often directly oppose socialist people, despite both being on the left side of the spectrum.  My brother is a socialist and professor. He DESPISES the wokist and their obsession with identity politics. He views them as the single worst thing to ever happen to the left and as fake leftist who are just authoritarians posing as leftists for convenience.

Notice how I was responding to "He's not political in general."  I said how much politics you get depends on what stuff of his you watch.  That's it.  I didn't say any of that other crap.

Fair enough but if you are going to argue someone is political in general, wouldn't they have to mention their politics some time other than when they're prompted by a question in a Q and A?

Greetings!

Matt Coleville has admitted he is a Socialist?

Geesus. I have enjoyed his gaming articles and contributions to different gaming books over the years. I think he has been fairly involved in writing and that kind of thing, if I remember correctly.

*Shrugs* If he has admitted to being a Socialist, well, Geesus. How fucking brain dead and stupid can a person be? I'm not surprised though. This kind of thing has revealed how many people that appeared talented and presumably had their heads on right--in fact turn out to be complete morons.

That makes me think of the actor, Robert De Niro. Once upon a time, I had thought he was surely one of the most solid, grounded people around, especially in Hollywood.

No, the truth turns out, De Niro is an anti-Trump, anti-gun, Globalist/Leftist fucking moron.

So, yeah. I am not surprised really that Matt Coleville is a Socialist moron. It's super popular nowadays, just like the "uber sexy" and fashionable AOC. Fucking AOC got ELECTED as a Socialist. And, while she's the front-runner and most popular, the rest of the "Squad" are all Socialists, too. A congresswoman down in Georgia, I think--Corey Bush?--she is a fucking COMMUNIST for fuck's sake. She was an activist and member of BLM before she got elected.

So, yeah. Half the jackasses under the age of 40 according to research fucking love Socialism. So, fuck 'em. Let them get power-fucked in the ass and they can wallow in the sewer as the country gulps down Socialism. Socialism brings LOTS of starvation, famine, poverty, and bloodshed. Lots of marauders roaming around, raping, torturing, and killing. The day will come where the "authorities" won't be around to protect all the Socialist morons from their own selfishness and stupidity. The whole rotten system will simply explode and die, like we see happens with Socialist shitholes, like Venezuela.

Matt Colville has never come across as woke. In fact, I admire his deep love of history. He seems to have a good grasp on history, culture, and how he can influence his own games. Even when he has similar talking points to more Woke personalities, he arrives at decisions based on his own personal opinions. For example:

He hates "evil" Orcs in his games, but the sole reason is because he finds that boring. But he also says that this is for his own games, and if everyone at your table wants Evil Orcs, then that's fine. He isn't here to tell you different.

He also hates the term "Race" but only because of its origins and what the term was used for. He personally uses the term "Ancestry" but has also still intermixes terms. Again, he doesn't look down on those that still use the term.

Matt doesn't FORCE people to use his worldview and in fact constantly stops what he is doing to explain that what works for your table works for your table, and he isn't the judge of your gaming group. That to me makes him okay in my book.

He likes 4e... then again, he likes ALL editions of D&D. Recently, he began feeling like 5e was a boring system and wanted to try out 4e again purely for the tactical style play. He also loves 1e as well, as that is the system he started on. I believe he has mentioned wanting to run a 1e game for his players as well.
