Title: Dungeoneering Maps
Post by: Thor's Nads on January 05, 2024, 04:49:07 AM
In this thread I am going to post maps you are free to use in your home game.

This is The Tomb of Solwey

Since I download a lot of other people's maps for use in my games, I'm going to take this opportunity to try and contribute back: Here's a 2 1/2 floor map I made for a vampire lair. These were made in Dungeon Painter Studio, so free to use, but I don't think they can be put in anything commercial:

Floor B1:

Floor B2:

Floor B3 (Where you land if you fall down the pits on the other floors):

Tonis was a cruel Baron of Ilbor Paiden who had a great dungeon built in which to condemn those who opposed him. After he died, infernal priests of Lashtar turned the dungeon into a great underground temple to their dark lord. Eventually their power faded and various nefarious creatures moved in.

King Agronis was a holy defender of the faith and of the people, until his daughter was killed in a tragic accident, he sought out practitioners of the dark arts to bring her back and he gave his life in return for hers. He was forever cursed to be an unhallowed dweller among the dead.

Very cool.  I made some hex maps for dungeon crawling.  Actually, a lot of them.  I know I have a few that I post for free use.  I'll have to find them and share them.

If you are looking for some good hex maps, though, I have a book on Big Geek Emporium.  Just do keyword search "Tactical Hex Maps".

I like how many of them have functional loops, so as to complicate the exploration and any chases. Further I enjoy that more naturalistic use of space, such as a cluster of rooms sharing walls or large ceremonial rooms. Please continue!

I hand-drew this map just for this forum's members!  (...Even the dots in the center of each hex.)  Only the coloring and red hex lines were done with computer assistance.

Enjoy!

LEGEND:
Yellow square - Closed door
Red square - Locked door
Lavender square - Secret door
Blue Circle - Open doorway
White X Square - Statue
Blue Hex - Water
Black Hex - Chasm

Rooms 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, and either 8 or 9 have a gem guarded by something.  There are six gem-sized indentations in the statue.

Rooms 8 and 9 are guarded by guards at area 7; the dilemma is the two-door riddle from the movie Labyrinth.  Follow the link for the riddle and SPOILER: The solution - https://nerdist.com/article/how-to-beat-the-labyrinth-two-door-riddle (https://nerdist.com/article/how-to-beat-the-labyrinth-two-door-riddle)

You're on your own getting into room 12.

Amarath the bandit lord took over the northern fortress and made it a base of operations for his gang.

I color adjusted this to be true non-photo blue, but I kind of like the darker blue I used on the previous maps.

The hex map I provided is free to all. I'd totally love it if you pass on this Big Geek Emporium link to my Tactical Hex Maps book.  Although the book is out of print, the PDF is crammed with extras!

For a typical map, like the ones I've been posting here. +/- $125 (as of Jan 2024), I can offer them for such a low price because I have templates and brushes set up for this, but the more complicated and detailed price can vary. Email me for discussion: dungeoneering@nightowlworkshop.com

In this thread I am going to post maps you are free to use in your home game.

This is The Tomb of Solwey

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMPus23ard2IYaTEcuuRiT04_uzzIE-uC3rv1EmuVAh9T9dOAp5rl1UQ4KhWR2IfyIja0z8epLgKlbFiWIDQYDVxK8eDKhFWyspgpV5TrIyeZKu9xB6czEs5AfkAB8v3JPhjZLLJBhcUGEwJ92bCbuca_ru-RgZVjWSMJkOgQXnmfQckEHdJ7BhmOYCzBZ/w494-h640/TombOfSolwey-blueline-1.jpg)

link (https://dungeoneering.blogspot.com/2022/04/mystery-map-tomb-of-solwey.html)

Quite like that style, it's a nice shade of blue that is vibrant enough to pop without inducing eye bleeding, and the cobblestone texture in the walls gives visual interest, though I'm personally partial to the classic crosshatch pattern.

Thanks for sharing, I'll probably drop a couple of these in my westmarches.

Thanks, I love the crosshatch pattern too, but so many cartographers use them I wanted to have something different to differentiate these maps.

Thanks! I hope they are professional grade. I've drawn maps for Goodman Games and Night Owl Workshop, and other publishers. And I take commissions.

I
"Hope"
they are professional grade, he says.

Absurd levels of modesty.
Maps like this belong in a bound hardback book.

The Einfaldur dungeon is a maze of corridors under the city, some of which have been abandoned and are now home to rats and other vermin. The adventurers must make their way through this labyrinth, avoiding or confronting both guards and criminals, to find and rescue a captive ally.

This was originally designed for a Sword & Planet adventure for Warriors of the Red Planet. I'm still working on the encounter key, but here is the map. The idea is a remnant of an ancient civilization live in the ruins of their ancestors, they've forgotten how to use the highly advanced technology that fills the place.

Nice.  I always liked that kind of backstory: a race with "lost" technology they don't know how it works unless they can figure out someday how to reverse-engineer it.

Tower of Xthar'Drim
A Sword & Planet adventure for Warriors of the Red Planet.
Xthar'Drim was a rogue Jedak who defied orders and broke away from Helium to form his own city state. He took the tallest tower in the ruins of an ancient city whose name is long forgotten, but is called Kith Drangor by the locals. There he began to build his kingdom, recruiting any scum and villainy that would join his ranks. He captures and enslaves others to throw into the dark pits under his tower, he uses these poor unfortunates in macabre gladiator games.

Tower of the Amaranthine Wizard
Tobias Ealdwil, known as the Amaranthine Wizard delved too deeply into eldritch lore, his mind became consumed with psychotic thought and he fell into a bizarre nightmare. His apprentice was eaten alive by an alien monstrosity summoned from the unknown depths of the abyss. His tower, once a beacon of learning and progress became infested with unspeakable abominations. Now it sits abandoned and forlorn at the northern edge of the region. An eerie magenta glow forever radiates inside.

Every era has a harbinger that represents the Spirit of the Age. At the end of the reign of the Eldritch Lords the darkest Harbinger, named Hyjel arrived who represented pestilence. Hyjel, whose name means cancerous rot in the foul tongue of demons, built a sinister spire that spread cancer throughout the land, a darkened blot on the peaceful countryside.

A conclave of wizards, clerics of light, and paladins joined forces to conquer Hyjel. A great battle ensued and Hyjel was forced to flee back to the Abyss he came from. His tower however remained, a dark and malevolent force that may contain great treasures and knowledge of dark sorceries.

Yeah, the hard part of running a tower adventure in a world where magic flying exists is controlling the ways in and out. Players love to skip all the stuff the DM prepared.

Yeah.  At this point I am making a lot of it up as I go.  I am going to do some preparing and I have the basic idea of the adventure planned out.

It used to drive me crazy when players skipped area but as I have improved as a DM, I don't care anymore.   Much of the time they are missing Money, Jewels and other valuable items and they just hurt themselves.
