This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

it all depends on what you call a nobody.

It seems to me that you think anyone who is not a WotC employee is a nobody in RPGs.

i'd say Luke is not a "nobody" plenty of people have heard of his games and he does have skill as a designer. You can go into most gaming stores that carry indie games and they will either know him by name or know the name of his games.

It seems there are actually some people who'd volunteer to pick the brown M&M's out of Luke's bowl...

How do you know he was corpulent?  Were you watching him through a glory hole?

And no, it's a general remark about the original thread and this one (to a lesser degree). It looks like he will get through with it at some cons... Make one game with tedious combat mechanics and you'll be a rock star. Maybe I should get my thesaurus and start writing some stuff. I'll demand first-class trans-atlantic flights and nubile "assistants" in uniforms mirroring the theme of my latest game.

I can agree with that. I can't say I like the DoW or the combat mechanics much. I like the World and Tech Burners though.

To be fair, I think he was an invted guest of the con and wanted less hassel. Now, he may not have picked the best words to complain about it on the Internet but if I were invited to attend a con, I'd expect *something*--if not the red carpet treatment.

I mean, I've not followed every thread he's ever posted in or anything but complaining on the Internet is hardly the worst of human failings.

The man wants 'Handlers' assigned to him specifically to bring him food and drink.

How many 'guests' of a Con can get that? Seriously? Can I get a staff member to cater to me next time I go to a Con?

Seriously, he could be E. Gary G. and I wouldn't expect him to get that sort of treatment from a god damn convention.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

Quote from: JamesVI can't seem to be bothered by his list of demands. Luke asserts that at a Con he will work hard to bring the fun for the guests and wants the staff to work equally hard for him. The way I see it, he just wants to make a small contract of sorts between the guests and the Con. Once that happens it works both ways. If I as a con organizer agreed to make the effort to take care of him, after the basics, it would be in direct proportion to what I could tell was the visitor reaction to him. Seems fair to me.

Except that as part of the contract he's proposing he wants food brought to him, the unruly crowds that never show up at his games attended to, and in return he offers to ignore all the bearucratic stuff that keeps businesses (including cons) running.

Hey man, handlers for guests ... that's pretty much standard policy at many cons.  The question is not whether some guests get them, it's how many and on what criteria.

If you're really worried about the logistics of that, we could probably spin off a thread about it in particular, but the general answer is this:  Seeing to the needs of multiple guests (even ten or more) is something a single person can do.  It's not a man-on-man defense sort of thing, it's that there is one person who is clearly, 100% responsible for being liaison between the con and that guest.

If you don't think he, personally, deserves that sort of treatment, that's fine.  But some cons do give him handlers, so again ... why would he not prefer those conventions?  And if he can fill his whole schedule with such conventions, why would he not do that?

I don't think Luke is too far off base. As someone who has driven 3 hours to get to a con, ready to run panels and games, only to find there are like 20 people there and the organizer is too busy having a mental breakdown to do anything, it isn't fun.

Bugger. I thought this thread was going to be about fat 40 year old guys dressed as Sailor Moon arguing about the rules with some fifteen year old D&D GM, or something.

"Guy _____________, falls in love with himself," isn't really news. Even if you don't put anything in the blank.

P.S.  I don't know if that is what is going on there. Hey, here's an idea folks: Just ask him. *shrug*

And that is why I can sympathize. There is a small, but genuine transaction when people agree to run games or sit in panels at a con, especially when the organizers bring in designers willing to spend long hours to give the Con content and to shill their products. And while laurels and slaying the fattened calf are unncessary, some consessions might be nice so they can concentrate on giving the usually admissions paying folks the best time they can offer.
