This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Does it ever get old?

Here I am, with over 20 years of roleplaying.  Today, my Amber group got together fairly impromptu to do some christmas day gaming (here in Uruguay, Christmas Eve is the big family/dinner night; and people get Christmas Day off, but rarely do anything heavy, so everyone was free).  And it was fantastic.

There's rarely a session where SOMETHING doesn't happen that I've never seen before in my long career. Individual campaigns can sometimes get boring, I suppose, but gaming itself, never. At least not for me.

Oh come on, don't be such a tease. Share the minutiae of your enthusiasm, what happen during your Amber game that made you feel great ?

Gaming itself can become boring if you're not matched with the right group.  I think that once you find the right group and you guys 'click' then you can have the experience that you're talking about.

Sometimes the society of gamers gets old but I think the immersive, interactive fantasy experience doesn't.

I have yet to burn out.  I've never needed a break from gaming, and have been gaming weekly, with some dry spells (never more than 3 months), for the last 14 years.

I love gaming.

I've had my dry spells, but only because of time constraints and such. Gaming doesn't get old.

Serious Paul

Gaming itself never loses that thrill for me. I hope it never does.

Narf the Mouse

Gaming is basically a 'You get what everyone puts in' hobby. So it does seem it would be very group-dependant.

Given a choice of two out of three M&Ms, the human brain subconsciously tries to justify the two M&Ms chosen as being superior to the M&M not chosen.

We end campaigns once they get boring. We might take a few sessions to do a wrap-up of it, but we move onto the next one quickly. Other than that, I game with my friends, so if a particular session is slow, there's always something to entertain us.

The Shaman

It did, for about twelve years.

I hung 'em up back in '89, and didn't even look at rpgs again until I saw 3.0 D&D in a shop in 2001. I decided to see what the ol' game was up to, and reintroduced myself to the game.

Now I'm running into the same problem as last time: everyone wants to play fantasy, and finding gamers for other genres is tougher. And this time it's even more difficult, because the systems I most interested in running are long out of print, so that shrinks my gaming pool even more.
On weird fantasy: "The Otus/Elmore rule: When adding something new to the campaign, try and imagine how Erol Otus would depict it. If you can, that\'s far enough...it\'s a good idea. If you can picture a Larry Elmore version...it\'s far too mundane and boring, excise immediately." - Kellri, K&K Alehouse

I've never had any hobby get old.

My problem is I have more hobbies than I have time.

It's not old after 32 years. Hard to see it getting old as long as I have players that grow with me.

Gaming has been nothing but a joy in my life, and I think it does have to do with the fact that I play with dear friends.

PaladinCA

The actual gaming itself doesn't get old.

The tedious game prep and the effort to get everyone together for a game sure does.

It helps to have a good group that makes everything worth the hassle. I wouldn't bother otherwise.

You know, it wasn't even anything in particular. It was just an unscheduled game, that managed to come together, and a long session of Amber where there was lots of cool shadow-walking, some fighting, lots of scheming, a few unexpected twists, etc.

And it just led me to think that its pretty amazing that I can play 3 times a week, and still never really get bored of the hobby itself, and only very rarely be bored even in a single given session.
