This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Does anyone have opinions on good 3rd party Mutants and Masterminds products?

Future Villain Band

I just decided to run M&M 3ed, and while I have a fairly robust collection of 2nd edition stuff, I'm wondering if anyone knows of any really good 3rd party material for the new edition.

Gabriel2

Not a clue.  (Just trying to bump a non-5e thread to have something interesting to read.)

I recently got into M&M3e.  It speaks to me, but it doesn't, if that makes any sense.  I like what I see, but the way powers are explained just doesn't ever seem to click in my head.  Still... I'm trying.

What are you looking for?  Books of characters?  Adventures?

Misfit Studios did some great stuff for 2E, and have a few pdf's out for 3E that look good. Most of them are smaller releases and inexpensive, so might be worth checking out. The one about the Marshal Service special unit that deals with Metahumans looks pretty interesting

Anything good, really -- I have a ton of stuff for 2e, and now I'm wondering why there isn't a similar tide of interesting stuff for 3e.  I guess it's easy enough to convert things to 3e, but I was wondering if I'd missed anything coming out that was fantastic.

It took me a little while to really love the power system, but now that I do, I don't know that I'd go back to 2e.  What's giving you a hiccup with it?

Huh, I'll check that out -- I have a few of their second edition books.

I've also been slightly surprised by the relative lack of support material for 3d.

It seems like most of the third party support these days is leaning towards  ICONs.

It's a personal mental block kinda thing.  Take the power of an Energy Blast.  It's an extremely simple power.  It's just Damage with the Increased Range Modifier.  The build for Blast is even helpfully provided in an example box.

The first problem I had was "How do I build this power?"  Initially I didn't know I needed to find a power called Damage and apply a modifier to it.  The Blast example power is not on the same page as the Damage power (for alphabetic organizational reasons), so I initially didn't associate it with the parent power.  The Blast Power also shows itself as "Ranged Damage" so I was looking for a "Ranged Damage" Power.  Then when I realized I needed to look at just Damage, I was still looking for a modifier labeled simply "Range".  Which Range is being referred to?  Should I look at Extended Range or Increased Rage?

I certainly could have bypassed all that and simply taken the Blast power at face value, but I wanted to know how the power was built so I could modify it or build my own.  It's just a matter of learning the terms and assumptions of the system.  But it's a bit rough for me to adjust.  The big point build system I'm coming off of is BESM, and I guess it's the same type of thing with different terms there (Weapon with a Range PMV), so it's just learning the lingo.

Incidentally, how would you make this power:

There was a character named Lifeforce in my old Marvel campaign.  Her ability was to drain someone's energy and use it to power herself up.  She could only do it by skin to skin contact and only with living things, so she couldn't drain robots.  She could drain from powersuit characters, but only if there was a way to touch their skin and could only drain their powersuit health.

In Marvel she mechanically handled very simply:  She had the Unearthly ability to drain Health.  This attack bypassed body armor and damaged Health directly.  This was treated as an Energy Attack (high lethality).  She could store 100 points of drained Health for her own personal use, either to mark off as damage or to transfer to other people.  She could heal other people's damage by touch, but she had to transfer some of her health points to them in order to do it.

So far I'm thinking it's a Damage Power with something like the Energy Absorption sample power (minus reaction) and Affliction all Linked together.  I'm not sure exactly what Flaws to apply yet.  Is the living-only restriction of the power a Quirk applied to the Damage power?

(Yes, I know no one is grading me on correct power construction, but for me figuring out the right way is part of the fun.)

Hmm, that's cool.  Hmm...The Parasite from DC uses a Life drain: Grab-based Weaken Stamina 18 (Resisted by Fortitude), and then I'd treat the Healing as Healing 18, Limited (Must have used Life Drain within last half hour), Persistent, Restorative (injury), Stabilize.

Does that work?

I do know they're going to update those to 3E, but right now they are doing smaller supplements. Too bad Algernon Files 3E only just started a kickstarter, because the older versions were fantastic

The shift to a mechanics-based Champions-esque power system annoyed a lot of people and cost them a lot of player base.  People who wanted to build Champions characters were already building Champions characters.  Steve Kenson defecting to Icons! was also a pretty big driver; a lot of people took that as a sign the line was no longer supported by GR (regardless of how correct that belief is/was).
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

Steve Kenson didn't "defect" to ICONS.  He has been the author of both Mutants & Masterminds Third Edition and ICONS, and continues to be.  He splits his time between both, as they scratch different itches.

I don't know if it works, but it definitely helps me build the connections I need to build the powers I want, so it's definitely the kind of thing I'm after.  Thanks.
