This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Doctor Who RPG: How is it doing?

Anyone care to hazard a guess, educated if possible, along with your reasoning behind it, as to how well Doctor Who is doing for Cubicle 7 sales-wise?

Of course, if the C7 people want to tell us how well its doing, we'll be glad to hear about it from them, and then no doubt comment about that.

I understand from Angus that the first print has just about sold out and C7 are seeking quotes for a second printing. That must mean it has been a success in anyone's book, even without knowing the actual numbers involved...

I agree with you, I think that is an indication of success.

However, I disagree that it is an indication of success "in anyone's book".  When the 4e PHB, DMG, and MM sold it's first AND second print run, lots of people still said it was not a good indication of success.  And when Pathfinder sold out it's first run, some people said that too was not a good indication of success.  So, some folks apparently do not think selling out a first print run is a good indication of success.

Casey777

Or you get like Dark Heresy which sold out in under 24 hours (if that even) and got an entire RPG company closed down. :D

jadrax

Selling out the first print run is irrelevant. All it means is that various distribution companies bought the amount they agreed to before it was printed. If the print run has sold out, but the boxes are sat on shop shelves gathering dust, its not a successful game.

All that said, I believe the game is selling rather well.

RPGPundit

Yup. I think the real test has to be if a SECOND print run sells out. Then you know that a game is at least a moderate success.

I think the second printing is the one where they're planning to do the big mass market push, with the new doctor on the covers and the new typeface and whatnot so that is the print run that will sink or swim based on public interest and the one to seek sales stats for.

Yeah that raises an issue, is the game geared towards David Tennant? Up comes a game but it's got the "old" doctor. Is the new one at least mentioned if not stated or whatnot in the game? It's not quite as bad as Decipher continually not having a new product on the shelves whenever a LotR movie came out or was released on DVD but it could be potentially not good!

I'm quite pleased to have the game now rather than having to delay just to get Matt Smith on the cover. Having said that, I do plan to buy the version with the new trade dress when that comes out.

I think there gonna change out some of the characters for new ones, so the new doc will replace tennant and so on.

RPGPundit

I don't think there's really anything missing in the game right now, unless you're just one of those anal obessives for "Official" stats. Because really, you can use the rules perfectly well to have the stats for the Matt Smith Doctor.

Assuming that the new printing comes out early in Smith's run, I think the only think likely to change in the manual is the artwork.

Frankly i could care less if they change anything in the boxset, i think any changes they make will be due to the fact its gonna be a major release so they will make sure the new doc is the one in all the books and stuff(including the character sheets).

RPGPundit

I forget now, I've barely had any time to actually look at my set, but is there even one pic of poor old Chris Eccelston in the whole thing?

How much do you want to bet that when the Matt Smith box set comes out, there'll still be plenty of pics of Tennant?

I think they'll just add matt smiths doctor and the new companions sheets into the mix and probably offer those of us who have the set already a .pdf file of the sheets for download via that special site they plan to launch along side the public release, i wonder if the monster guide will contain anything new though? or maybe they'll release an updated version of that aswell down the line?

But Tennant is pretty and Eccelston has those funny ears.
