This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Do I need a license for a D&D B/X or 1e module publication?

Ghostninja:

I plan to eventually do print on demand.  It appears that Drivtehru accepts only two programs - Indesign looks too complicated to take the time to learn - Affinity, I'm not sure about.  I'm going to look into other outfits like lulu - I'm not sure yet.

Karmarainbow:

OSE asks for a copy of the work and also wants me to say "requires Old School Essentials".  Not sure how I feel about that yet as although I've been calling it B/X - I'm putting in variants, like advantage/disadvantage, descending and ascending AC next to each other, etc.  I'm not sure how  saying "requires Old School Essentials" would impact people looking at it.

It's annoying that you are limited to only two programs.

But know, I will check it out when its available in print.

Yes, buyers may assume that it is fully compatible with OSE, so that might irritate some people. They tend to be purists judging by the Facebook group.

(OSE actually includes ascending AC as a variant btw.)

Do you see any significant drawback to publishing under Necrotic Gnome's OSE license?

This is my first publication and I'm not sure if I'm giving up anything significant for now or the future.  Thanks.

As mentioned above by other people. But I don't think you get much flak if you stay in te right ballpark. Ad/disad is fine, maybe add a note explaining it. Descending and ascending AC is expected, I think. There are various small reasons to avoid the license but probably, commercially speaking, they are compensated by greater exposure. I didn't use it but it seems to be working well for other people, I might try one day.

Thank you, Ghostninja.

Eric D,  on the fist page I've written how advantage etc works. Even though the product will say requires OSE, I bet I could put something hung crew and be about others OSR systems. I think I will take a chance on the potential exposure gain from OSE.
