Are you ready for Dungeons & Dragons as an eSport?  Introducing: DnDSports.  From Comic Book:

Quote from: Comic BookA popular streaming production company has announced a new competitive Dungeons & Dragons tournament as a way to merge competitive esports with tabletop gaming.

Encounter Roleplay, a streaming channel that frequently partners with Dungeons & Dragons, has announced DnDSports - a new online D&D tournament. The tournament is billed as a way for competitive games to get comfortable with trying out Dungeons & Dragons as well as a unique way to depict the versatility of D&D's fifth edition combat system.

The rules are relatively simple - two teams of four characters will be placed in a dungeon and will battle to the death. Players will choose from a collection of 15 pre-generated characters, each with their own unique abilities and traits. In addition, the tournament will utilize a Pick/Ban system similar to some existing MOBA tournaments.

Each game will still have a dungeon master and some opportunities for roleplaying, but obviously most of the games will be focused on combat. The tournament is also sponsored by D&D Beyond, the popular digital character builder and rules resource.

The tournament will feature four teams duking it out in a single elimination format, with winners determined by a best of three battle. The winner of the tournament will win $5,000 and money raised during the tournament will also go to the 826LA charity.

D&D as PvP isn't new. It was popular at conventions in the 1e days. Lots of fun and I've run several Team vs. Team events.

During 4e, RPGA had their dungeon delve competitions at cons. Your team fought several encounters and those who made it farthest in the dungeon won.

Also, RPGA during 0e and 1e hosted terrific D&D tournaments, its how several notable modules were originally run (Tomb of Horrors, Slave Lords, etc). I could see that format working well for an eSports thingie.

PC vs PC wouldn't work with the 4e rules, but I can see it being fun in 5e.

Imagine if they ever reworked this into a rpg version of a intro

I can't see that it would be all that entertaining but someone might like it.

I'm just glad they've officially declared it's going to be a safe place. We've had a lot of dice-rolling injuries at my amateur D&D table, hope the pros can come up with some good safety equipment for these activities.
Every time I think the Forgotten Realms can\'t be a dumber setting, I get proven to be an unimaginative idiot.

Of course it will be a safe space.  Nobody will have to worry about stepping on a d4 that was unknowingly knocked off the table onto the floor.  :D

This one time I went to shift a pewter mini and scratched myself on a burr. They'll be sure to have those filed off properly.

This wont work. Parties of paladins smiting each other is going to get old fast.

So back in the day circa 1985, I hear of a AD&D tournament in Western PA north of Pittsburgh. When I got there one event was a fight club. The organizers created a quasi point buy system where you made a 8th level character and had a budget for magic items. From my experience playing AD&D, I knew this to be unworkable due to some classes clearly better than other, namely the Druid.

So I created my 8th level Druid, equipped him with a modest array of magic items like +2 Scimatar, +2 leather, etc. Nothing special just stuff to augment his melee combat.

And I won. Largely because the Druid's secret weapons is their ability to heal because of shapeshifting. They fight on the cleric combat table so they are not half bad at melee. Being limited to Leather is annoying but workable with the right selection of magic items. And teh spell selection is very useful in controlling the battlefield. And control was the key to seizing the imitative and making the fight one on your terms rather than your opponents.

As a result I won this nicely painted miniature which I still own.

It's all about the d4 caltrops. Those cylinder ones are all the rage in D&D safety equipment.

This is fucking ridiculous. A bunch of Millennials will probably love this.  SJWs too, not for themselves but because it allows more strict control over the RPG experience.

I am already shedding tears, tears of righteous rage!, for the poor GM who has to CPU Server all the ongoing casted summons while being blamed for unfairness by all sides...

Maybe they should offer standardized tests in which to license judges for this shitshow! :) Maybe we can encourage them to make the GM experience even more miserable -- with prerequisites! :D

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.
