This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Designing characters around equipment.

In my Ravenloft campaign, the PCs had an enclosed, gypsy style wagon. They were always going to be on the move (they were fleeing an evil force), so I decided that if they couldn't have a place to base from, they should have a portable base.

It had a double bunk, table, storage both inside and out. Stocked with a portable forge (I used the one found in Aurora's), water barrel, cooking pot, pans, bowls, plates, cups, dry goods and camping gear. It even had a small shrine for the half-vistani priest (he worshiped Fharlanghn, god of travel, so it was perfect)

I sold them on the idea when the ranger and priest went looking for horses for the group. I had the stable master show them the wagon as something some one had ordered from the wainwright, but never picked up (it had been 3 years). Since it hadn't been paid for and it was past the time of pick up, the wainwright was willing to let it go for half price, just to get rid of it. (the wainwright had the deposit, but the contract was up) (For clarity, the wainwright and stable master are brothers-in-law).

The players eyes lit up at the prospect of not having to tote everything they owned around in a backpack or saddle bags. I threw in two cheap draft horses and off they went. All in all, it was cheaper than buying a riding horse and tack for 5 people.

It gave the party a unique sense of style. They treated the wagon like it was their home.

I mean jesus. It's a DUNGEON. You're supposed to walk in there like you own the place, busting down doors and pushing over sarcophagi lids and stuff. If anyone dares step up, you set off fireballs.

Quote from: Dominus NoxAnyone ever design a character's equipment, then make the character around it?

Sure. BESM has always had options specficially designed to facilitate this concept (Own Big Robot, anybody?). And, of course, you have stuff like Trigun. Anime is rife with this kind of character :)

Mind, I think that the true test of a player is when they are without easy access to their goodies or without them altogether. So I tend to view the equipment as an extension of some goal or motivation of the character, not the other way around. :pundit:

Item of Power, Own a Big Mecha, etc. (nods). :keke:

Heh, speaking of Trigun & similar, I need to model Killy's GBE (Gravitational Beam Emitter) in BESM.

is close, except for taking out the Megastructure walls behind and to the side for some distance...

I've always wanted to play a giant grave digger who fights with a spade and carries around the chained and padlocked coffin of his undead baby daughter.

Yes, and both times all their cool stuff got destroyed in session one. Thus never again did I bother much with equipment. Its useful sure, and I try to keep track of it. But just as often as not you lose it.

My group has recently introduced me to the beer bottle rule, which I'm having trouble with but basically you assume you have whatever you need unless circumstances dictate otherwise or you specifically ask if you have it.

You must be one troubled individual.:raise:
