OK historical question...Does anyone know if Gary said anything against, or tried to shut down, Arduin?
(I've heard offhand references to him doing this - but not at all sure how accurate the claims were, or what the details are).

If you read his diatribes in the DMG and elsewhere against cheap D&D knockoffs, some of that is about Arduin without naming it.

Gary fought bravely for many rounds against Arduin but sadly, after getting a critical hit and losing a buttock, the fight went right out of him.

I read somewhere that the magic item "Vacuous Grimoire" (DMG, p. 155) is a veiled dig at the "Arduin Grimoire".

TSR sent a threat of legal action or a C&D or something similar to Arduin for referencing D&D directly, and the response by Hargrave was just to white-out the references and ship the books like that. At least, that's the story.

Yeah, people (especially some in the OSR) tend to forget these things about Gygax's past. On the other hand, its very likely his opinions on these things changed... once was no longer in power at TSR.

The book I am reading, "Playing Against the World", devotes a fair amount of text to the first Arduin Grimoire, which was released at DunDraCon II. Hargrave did indeed get a cease and desist letter from TSR and he responded by removing references to D&D.

I thought it was humorous that many people were disappointed with Arduin simply because, at $9.50, it was almost as expensive as the D&D boxed set!
