This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: jibbajibba;366903Now don't get me wrong I have nothing against whores or porn stars but it is odd that we get loads of disenting comments when we mention having a glass of wine with a game as many tables seem to ban alcohol but playing with prostitutes is celebrated ... just saying :)
I'm not going to be the one forbidding you to have a glass of wine at the game table. If you want some wine, go ahead, you're a responsible adult. If you screw up, get piss drunk, obnoxious etc, you'll just not be invited again, but not before you actually screw up.

As for pornstars, well, like Sigmund said. They're people. Look. I'm Catholic. Some of my best friends are gay. The Church doesn't like gay people, but I don't give a shit. They're my friends, and their well being is more important than what some archbishop who's never had a relationship besides his hand's says somewhere. That's what Jesus was preaching, to me: looking through appearances, wealth, whatever, and see the person for what she or he is. Pornstars aren't automatically bad people in my book. They just happen to make a choice I wouldn't make.

Anyway.

No don't get me wrong I am not saying pornstars or prostitutes are bad people (a little lazy one suspects and perhaps overly materialistic) I mean 2 of my murder mystery actors used to be lapdancers (and will perhaps be again next month once they see how hard it can be to earn money from a normal job) and I love 'em to bits. :0

I was merely pointing out that a pornstar is just a whore you are allowed to film and I found the US lionisation of pornstars compared to it's marginalisation and alientation of prostitution somewhat risible. I mean this article would not have bene published on that site if it had been titled playing D&D with whores (no jokes about the guys from Penny Arcade we are above that sort of finger pointing)... just saying

Also I suspect its a little disingenuous of the folks that chimed in with the Yeah, cools at the start of this thread to adopt the 'but I am celebrating the strength and diversity of the hobby and I would have cheered just as verhemently had the article been about a cross -denominal religious roleplaying group in New York.' You know ' a rabbi, a priest, an imman and a gnostic preacher walk into a bar and the priest says "I'm playing my necromancer if no one minds" '  .
You were all thinking how cool it would be to play with a hot chick that has sex for money and might be impressed if your halfling fighter can take down that Storm Giant single handed...
You can admit it. This is a safe place. "My name is Jibbajibba and I am a roleplayer..."

(PS the Bible does say we have to stone prostitutes to death.. though Jesus does interceed with a 'let him who is without sin..." and he hangs round with prossies all the time so I reckon its probably OK in Jesus's book and to paraphrase Monty Python,.. If its good enough for Jehovah...)

And what is the halfling doing with his other hand?
On weird fantasy: "The Otus/Elmore rule: When adding something new to the campaign, try and imagine how Erol Otus would depict it. If you can, that\'s far enough...it\'s a good idea. If you can picture a Larry Elmore version...it\'s far too mundane and boring, excise immediately." - Kellri, K&K Alehouse

I could say the same about most lawyers I know.

QuoteI was merely pointing out that a pornstar is just a whore you are allowed to film
I think one subtle difference that ends up being important is that porn stars don't hang out on street corners and scare the tourists. Here in Vegas, before stuff was substantially cleaned up, prostitutes were VERY aggressive in seeking their clientele down in the tourist corridor. I've seen them run up to cars at street lights and approach older married couples. These have nothing to do with the legal brothels outside of town who can openly advertise their wares. The streetwalkers are still around but they're a lot less forward.
Public outrage is lessened when stuff like that isn't thrown in their face.

Also, the porn industry (and the legal brothels) have rules they adhere too... including having a clean bill of health and regular checkups. The streetwalkers are a menace because they're operating outside the law.

Yeah, well... Grimm's Fairy Tales says we're supposed to burn witches in ovens and we can defeat greedy goblins by guessing their names... so...

Well Nevada is the only state with legal brothels so you guys are was more rational and yet most of the porn is made in California go figure....
but I don't think the majority of prostitutes are street walkers they are merely the lowest tier. There is a healthy and active web based community I understand.

And technically I think Rumplestiltskin was a dwarf not a goblin... (the bible reference was just for Benoist and only quoting the first half of my comment was well... only telling half the story :) )

I very much disagree with that thought.

These days, a 'porn star' might actually be doing a bit of acting or is treating the job as a two or three year temprary thing so that she can save money and switch into a different career.
They are not "whores".

As to Prostitution? It should legal and somewhat regulated so that there are health check-ups and they pay taxes like everybody else.

Exactly - whores will have sex with anyone for money. Porn Stars are much more selective about who they have sex for money with.

Quote from: jibbajibba;366903And what is with the US legal system where brothels are illegal in most states but the adult movie industry is lauded. Couldn't brothels just put web-cams in each room and then they would be legal as well? again just curious.

My guess is that in the porn industry, nobody's paying to be part the sex, in theory.  If you were to operate a FREE 'brothel' with cameras (or not, I guess), it might be legal.

Quote from: Werekoala;367050Exactly - whores will have sex with anyone for money. Porn Stars are much more selective about who they have sex for money with.

I'm pretty sure that there are plenty of prostitutes you'd never catch in front of a camera who are very choosy about their clientele.  Likewise, there are plenty of porn stars whose only criterion for a 'costar' is their presence.

Quote from: Simlasa;366926I don't see that much novelty in it... but I live in Las Vegas. Porn stars, prostitutes and strippers are the folks next door... and a lot of them are just honest working folks. As long as nobody is being forced into anything and they're getting medical inspections I see no harm.
Prostitutes are just a special variety of therapists... I'm glad they're out there providing a service to the folks who need it.

Hell, I dated strippers back in my drinking and drugging days (AKA the '80s), but it's still kinda a novelty to me, not because of pornstars per se, but because juxtaposing porn and RPGs is something that I have never had occasion to think about before. It's mildly entertaining and plus the blog is pretty well written IMO.

With a title like "Playing D&D with Pornstars" or "Playing D&D with Strippers, Whores, Catholic School Girls, or Hot Chicks in General" I'd go there - once.

It just so happens Zak has a good blog.  The guy's entertaining to read, and has some great ideas.

I agree about the US hypocrisy along these lines. Otherwise, I'm not so sure it's people just thinking about playing DnD with hot chicks. I think it's just that pornstars are not the kinds of folks one might think of as RPGers. It's easy for folks to forget that pornstars, prostitutes, strippers, etc... as still just being people with lives oftentimes separate from what they do for money. It's the same sort of phenomena as when learning Vin Diesel plays DnD or that Curt Schilling has played MMOs from EQ to WoW and that he used to play Advanced Squad Leader while traveling the country as a Major League Baseball player.

Well, another thing that makes a pornstar different from a prostitute is that a pornstar does not engage in sex with the customer, only with other pornstars. The customer is only a spectator for the event rather than a participant... at least directly. Any further involvement is TMI, and I don't want to read about it.

Plus, I agree with Ed about legalizing and taxing prostitution.
