This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: Old One Eye;750862All the kids I know would want a free app for mobile devices to  create and manage characters.

Or at least I would.  :)

I might sound like an old fart, but kids need to spend more time away from their cellphones and other devices. I've GMed different games for my 11-year daughter from time to time and the only thing allowed at the table is paper, pencils, rulebooks...you know, the tried-and-tested RPG materials.

Quote from: Endless Flight;750834I can't get over the fact that it says "D&D" on the top in tiny letters and Dungeons & Dragons in in a little box off to the side.

The formatting is weird they should put it diagonal left-top corner.

Good thing WOTC's not making these two adventures then. :)

Pretty neat right? On both decisions.

I didn't expect the books so soon. I've kind of been out of the loop on 5e for the last six months. I hope WotC does a great job and they can rekindle interest in tabletop games, with hopefully an even bigger splash than the 3e release.

I think it will make a huge splash especially if it's more accessible than 4e. And I think it will be if they're serious about the multi platform thing. And a free character builder and app would answer that nicely.

A free SRD independent of whatever OGL they allow would seal the deal.

I personally couldn't imagine not having at least one tablet at the gaming table these days.  I mean, I've done it many a times before they were invented, but now that they're here... they're just so danged convenient.  Between having all of the various rulebooks, maps, character builders...

hrrrmm?? I believe they distract or take away from the role-playing part of the game, which is really about using the best tablet available which is.....

...YOUR BRAIN!

Imagination trumps anything you could ever conceivably do with a tablet or handheld device.

You don't need to be rich to have an imagination.

Your imagination doesn't need batteries.

Using your imagination, you can weave new stories, and share unique experiences.

Can't do that with any kind of device, at best with a device, you get to share an experience created by someone else.

There are a lot of people that say, "I have a terrible imagination."

I'd have to agree with them. Pretty sure that never practicing or never trying to use their imagination, contributed to creating that particular odd fiction though.

The devices are just a tool though, they are not meant to replace imagination. Just like graph paper, dice and pencils are tools. I use computers all the time to make prep easier and to make managing data during a session easier. If they can put together some solid apps to help make those sorts of things, then i am all for it. The only real problem smart devices present at the table that I have seen is some folks can't handle having access to their email and texts messages during a game (the urge to check and respond is just too strong for them and a distraction). Other than that, I do not see any issues.

So you play without books? Because that's all a tablet replaces. And a stereo.

For all the Luddites out there, the good news is that you can probably just skip the Starter Kit and wait for the core books. I'm willing to bet that all of the proper info is right in there - no internet connection needed! You'll be all set. Until the first errata comes out, of course. Then you'll need print-outs or whatever.

They'll wait until it's printed in Dragon, duh.

And wait.

And wait.

I bring books. Mostly for the other players. All the charts I need for 0D&D I can keep on a single GM's screen.

I do have a hard time playing or running a game without a map though. I do like having maps available for the players. Mostly beautifully designed custom maps...

I also like bringing binders, which contain campaign and adventure info, and will usually have a few relevant pages of that as a reference spread out behind my Gm's screen during play.

Do I play without books and supplements? No. Do I play without chargen? No.
