For Dnd in my games miniatures are used to set marching order and pretty much ignored unless it's an important set piece,battle or unique terrain is a factor.  So it depends and changes as needed. I have no hard and fast rule about it. Also since I don't own a battlemat being able to do things gridless is a priority.

I totally agree. I have mixed board games with my RPG campaigns several times with great success, and I love when the integration is easy. Board games can be a great way of representing big setting-changing events beyond the scope of the PCs, or to represent the big power and influence games of high - level PCs. Either way is good for me.

I'm with this opinion, but a lot depends on how it is implemented. FASA Star Trek had a great combat simulation game, but the RPG side was pretty crappy, this pattern was repeated by FASA in Battletech/Mechwarrior. DnD 3.x is pretty seamless in being an RPG and a miniatures game because a lot of the miniatures part is optional, however DnD 4E sucked donkey balls because of its intense focus on being a miniatures centric game and the combat encounter.

For me, D&D 4e is the best hybrid RPG since Warhammer Quest, but WHQ stands supreme because of its awesome weirdness.

Having played lots of Savage Worlds, I really enjoy the way that you can handle crazy big battles very fast. I am looking forward to running more Mage Knight fantasy in the future.

Gorilla Games Battlestations! is an excellent retro-SF themed boardgame with roleplaying elements.

I have successfully hacked Savage Worlds into a sort of Advanced HeroQuest clone.

A friend of mine once ran a fantasy RPG by having two of his non-RPGing roommates play a game of chess, and then interpreting their moves as the gods of the setting marshaling their minions, influence, and followers.

Totally at random I've been reading my copies of Ghostbusters 1st ed and Inspectres, and now I want to kitbash some rules for a map of Manhattan showing escalating supernatural events with randomly generated spooks such that the PCs have to choose their targets.  Possibly with an Arkham Horror style countdown mechanic so the Big Bad shows up when the PKE level gets too high, not when the PCs just happen to be ready for him.

The Birthright setting was originally playtested as a Game of Thrones style boardgame first, and using it as a political state generator and simulator would work pretty well.
D&D is becoming Self-Referential.  It is no longer Setting Referential, where it takes references outside of itself. It is becoming like Ouroboros in its self-gleaning for tropes, no longer attached, let alone needing outside context.

This sounds very much like an expansion on the basic idea for the Atari 2600/C64/Amstrad/Spectrum/SMS/NES/you-get-the-idea Ghostbusters game by Activision.. not to say it's not a cool idea!
