This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I actually remember as a kid going to the movies, plunking down two bits (25c) to get in, and spending another (25c), and getting a coke, a big bag of popcorn, and a small bag of loose candies (like tootsie rolls, salt water taffy, and butterscotchies) and watching Commando Cody before the feature film, and often they would play another episode during the intermission.
Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

Quote from: Bradford C. Walker;572963For inspiration, you need go no further than Edward E. "Doc" Smith's seminal Lensmen series: Triplanetary, First Lensman, Galactic Patrol, Gray Lensman, Second Stage Lensman, Children of the Lens.
I was going to suggest this. It's a great series and the Lensmen are very much like space police.

Steve Perry wrote two novels in a "Stellar Ranger" series ("Stellar Ranger" and "Lone Star" are the titles) and they are pretty much westerns in space with the lead character being a marshall.

As far as RPG systems go, you might look at THOUSAND SUNS. It's a cool system inspired somewhat by H. Beam Piper style scifi.

I recommend a new set of books that is written like an old fashioned pulp space opera.  The first book is Leviathan Wakes, and the second is Caliban's War, by James Corey.

While there are other characters and plot lines, the primary plot line is about Captain Jim Holden and his crew (Pilot, Engineer, and XO), his "salvaged" ship the Rocinante, on a set of missions sponsored by the head of one of the three main factions in the solar system (the Outer Planets Association).  They're given a broad goal, like "Go find out what the heck just happened to space station whatever, and deal with it" and then the team deals with it mostly as they see fit.  Good, solid space opera series, that would fit right in with a game.

I recommend anything between Frank R. Paul and the '60s TV Thunderbirds.
