With a die/dice+modifier system, you wouldn't neccesarily get DCs that are closer together. Most bell-curve systems have the intention of making higher DCs even more unattainable.

Why do away with the most iconic elements of D&D (which Pundit pretty well summed up in his post?)  To win over hypothetical players who suffer erectile dysfunction when exposed to Initiative rolls?  

What's there to gain?

I'm just saying that most of those mechanic elements aren't as iconic as one might think. They did away with quite a lot when they introduced 3E already (bend bars, anyone?). We're just arguing how much one could strip away, while  still retaining enough "D&D-ness". For no good reason at all but the sake of the argument.

Although I have a bad feeling that we'll go a long way down that road with the release of 4E...
