This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Did your parents apologise for the Satanic Panic?

Quote from: BedrockBrendan;751500I have to admit this mentality is a bit foreign to me. Unless there was much more to it than prohbiting gaming and taking away some books, I don't see the need for an apology. Parents set limits on what entertainment their children can consume and what activiities they can participate in all the time.
Well, I was thinking in part of some of the examples people had raised of shit their parents had done during the Satanic Panic, like taking away their D&D stuff and making them watch whilst they burned it. There's a world of difference between "You're not allowed X" and "I am going to make you watch me destroy something you own".
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

Malleus Arianorum

My parents apologize for nothing.

For my parents, it was not really a satanic panic because as Presbyterians they don't believe in Satan. It was more of an anti-Catholic panic. Concerned that exposure to belief in the power of prayer and blessings and spirits and holy water and icons and corporal resurection was a step backwards to pre-Protestant beliefs. In other words, they fear D&D is a catalyst to historical Christianity.

They were civil for the most part. They made me return my stuff to the bookstore, but I got to keep the store credit. Later on, I feigned interest in a genuinely bizzare Christian parent. They over reacted against that so strongly that they allowed non-D&D gaming.

But why should I want their apology? They're worst nightmare has already come true -- I'm Catholic.

I did know other Christian kids though who would burn their own stuff. Go to Jesus Camp, get all fired up and come home and zealously purge all their mix-tapes, comic books, rock n roll posters, and what not. Then replace it all a few weeks later. I knew one guy who did that a dozen times. At the end he'd just give me all his stuff before he went, and ask for it back later.
That\'s pretty much how post modernism works. Keep dismissing details until there is nothing left, and then declare that it meant nothing all along. --John Morrow
