Title: [D&D 5e Homebrew] SteamWorks: A Guide to Technological Power
Post by: GnomeWorks on December 19, 2019, 07:00:24 PM
As I discussed in my previous thread regarding my 5e homebrew, I am working on a series of documents that each concern themselves with a particular "power source," in order to translate my setting properly into 5e. This is basically the 4e power source concept cranked up to 11 with the knob ripped off, and implemented properly (so far as I consider the best way to implement them, at any rate).

So at this point, while it has some notable glaring holes, I'd like if folk could give me some feedback on SteamWorks, the book for the technological power source. Of the nine or ten of these I intend to write, this one is probably the most extensive in terms of additional content, as technology is pretty far-reaching in terms of effects on the world and the sorts of things you can do with it, so it's probably going to be the longest one. Constructive feedback and criticism is appreciated, be it regarding game mechanics, flavor, or grammar and voice; please keep comments akin to "why don't you do this in another system" to yourself.

At present, all the classes are complete, and the inventions list is around 90% finished; additional augments are planned, but I don't have a reasonable list of ideas for that as of yet. If you take a look at the ToC, sections that are in green are started but unfinished, while sections in blue are planned but unwritten. The vehicles chapter, in particular, is a bit of a mess at the moment.

Whole bunch of views, but no thoughts?

I get that it's a tome, but I'll take anything. Even just first impressions or an "I only skimmed through it" sort of thing.

First time I ever got a message saying this file is too large to preview. Ok, while I wait for this to download (all 445 MB) I have no idea what SteamWorks is, so is this a SteamPunk thing or something else? Because we have some  younger guys at The Ruins that are also into SteamPunk.

Yeah it's half a gig. I have no idea how or why it ballooned up that fast, but... it did.

Yes, it is mostly vaguely steampunk. It's got dashes of dieselpunk, atompunk, and cyberpunk thrown in, as well, but the overall aesthetic is in a like... 80% steampunk/20% dieselpunk mix. So the cyberpunk elements are explicitly translated into something that would make more sense in a steampunkish setting, for example.
