This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Dark Ages Map(s)
« on: August 01, 2011, 08:40:32 AM »
Been looking through the sticky links and failing. Also done a fair bit of Googling but have come up blank as well.

Im looking for some Dark Ages era maps of Europe, Britain and the Middle East.

I know Storyteller Secrets for Vampire Dark Ages came with a map of europe, but I bought it off eBay and it arrived map-less.

Any links or suggestions for decent sized images please....

Assuming you're talking about the original setting, which is in 1197, you want to find a map of the Old World around 1200 CE, that can be found right here.

The only really important event that differentiates 1197 and 1200 from a map standpoint is some wars involving Bulgaria. If you're setting things in Western Europe or the Med, you do not have to care.

I wrote a game called After Sundown. You can Bittorrent it for free, or Buy it for a dollar. Either way.

Just for clarification: are you looking for reproductions of maps which were drawn in the Dark Ages, or for modern-style maps depicting Europe as it was in the Dark Ages?
Obvious troll is obvious. RIP, Bill.

I'm pretty sure people in dark age europe didn't really do maps. They traveled by directions - lists of places to visit or see while on the road to let you know you are on the right path. There wasn't much in the way of government funded cartographers. That's part of what made the dark ages, dark.

You would be wrong. Example 1, example 2.

The so called "Dark Ages" weren't so dark as some people like to think. Nor was the Renaissance so enlightened.

To clarify, Im looking for playable usable maps that are functional in play rather than purely for decoration.

Whilst hunting through my old rpg files, I came across a European map from the year 1000ad. It had the name Euratlas, which I Googled, and uncovered this little website.

http://www.euratlas.net/history/europe/index.html

Ill double post on the Sticky RPG links, so delete/move as necessary.

The website has a map of Europe every 100 years, and is perfect for what Im looking for, adequate enough anyhow.

Years ago I found a book of maps in the VCU(Virginia Commonwealth University) Library with period maps of ALL towns/villages of England and Wales. Don't remember the book but a bit of research might turn it up. There are tax/census maps out there.

Ars Magica had a few good ones.
"These children are playing with dark and dangerous powers!"
"What else are you meant to do with dark and dangerous powers?"
A concise overview of GNS theory.

If you care about character arcs or any, any, any lit 101 stuff, I'd choose a different game.

Yep, I discovered that one years ago myself.  Very cool!

I wish there were more resources like this.
Now Prepping: One-shot adventures for Coriolis, RuneQuest (classic), Numenera, 7th Sea 2nd edition, and Adventures in Middle-Earth.

Recently Ended: Palladium Fantasy - Warlords of the Wastelands: A fantasy campaign beginning in the Baalgor Wastelands, where characters emerge from the oppressive kingdom of the giants. Read about it here.

Great map resource, but were they drawn by a Frenchman?

Look at the resource for Europe in 1200 then look at this map of the same period ...http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/maps/1174angev.jpg Notice anything different about the size and shape of France ?
