Nothing. Everything. There's just a premise being circulated here that SF gamers and Traveller gamers are just average. Fortunately that's a premise that is Independently verifiable as untrue. I'm witnessing a surprising number of regulars who affirm that though, in spite of evidence to the contrary (Even evidence they themselves present).

For example, one even went so far as to say, While he was in college, he went out of his way to be a criminal and break laws. My point was, that he quit doing so, unlike the folks in normal society that are predisposed to continuing to commit crimes, right up until the time they get caught. And that SF/Traveller Gamers as a group share this characteristic and are different from Normal in this regard, and in many other ways as well.

What do these gamers gain by dragging down their peers?

Are they going to get more gamers for their game?

Why are they derailing a thread making such ludicrous claims.... Oh wait, we're on the RPGSite... never mind.
Blackmoor grew from a single Castle to include, first, several adjacent Castles (with the forces of Evil lying just off the edge of the world to an entire Northern Province of the Castle and Crusade Society's Great Kingdom.

Why do you talk about yourself in the third person plural?

Because even he thinks that he is a fictional character?

I think people here have higher expectations for "Average" than I do.

Really the problem relates to the claims Gary Gygax would make about gamers being smarter than average, which were then followed by long essays in other games about how dumb that other game was and how smart their fans were.  Then we got Vampire which shifted the debate from intelligence to fashionable artsifartsiness.

All told I really think gamers and the industry are the main causes of gaming's decline.  All the "no girls allowed" groups of the eighties giving way to the "nobody under eighteen" groups of the nineties to the "no catpiss men (ferret piss okay) groups of the naughties to the new generation's "nobody who thinks, believes, talks, or looks differently than me and certainly nobody who might bruise my fragile sense of self worth by disagreeing with me" individuals who are no longer able to be in a group with anyone at all so they post on Tangency.

Just, go, game. Don't worry about being cooler, smarter, artier, whatever. Just. go, game.

Heck I like Trav (now) and Star Frontiers. I liked Trav 2300. I like Alternity, Justifiers, Stablazers Adventures, Star Wars D6, Star Wars Saga. Just pick one you like and play.

Enough of the tides of bullshit. Do you like x game? Yes. Get to it.

I'm probably just angry because putting a group together around here is a bit like playing Tetris.  This guy won't play this but that guy won't play with this guy and on and on it goes.

Personally, comparing RPG world to my experiences in other spheres like video games or food, the only difference I've noticed is a somewhat higher percentage of individuals with diagnosed mental illness among RPG players.

I suspect its  two things.

One:  A tendency in my experience for some RPGers to want attention.

I don't want attention on me, though. I'd prefer it on my illness. It is not something terrible or "ooky" to anyone but me. Of course I'm not an idiot, I go to my doctor, counselor, and take meds as prescribed. This is not true of a lot of diagnosed individuals. I also want to be a more functional member of society.

I do tend to be compared to quite a few who I've met with my illness. In the Taekwondo class I participate in one woman found out said to me "You seem so calm." Of course the vast majority of those in the TKD classes are nursing students (Their first question is usually, "What medication are you on?")

Two: There really aren't anymore in RPGing than anywhere else. You just spend more time with RPG people, so it seems that way. If you spent that time around other groups that meet regularly for a common thing. Say knitting. You'd find a roughly equal proportion. I know my mom has scrap-booking individuals who bring up similar things and issues.

Then again, creative folk trend high in terms of mental illness. No matter the creativity.  Painting, writing, creative gaming. (Not all gaming is admittedly.)

My own recollection of the 80s is that there were more girls, not less, gaming back then.  This was before D&D came to be viewed as the exclusive hobby of total geeks.
